It challenges you on every level, and it's always waiting around the corner with another punch... It is just so much easier to say "I love you" to people... I mean the grim joke of Parkinson's is it's the gift that keeps on taking... I think it's great to create beauty through movement... Peace About Life: Dancing with Parkinson's is a collection of uninhibited, first-hand accounts of struggling, thriving, re-defining identity, and finding peace while living with Parkinson's disease. Claudine Naganuma, artistic director of dNaga Dance Company and certified Dance for PD(R) instructor, spent years interviewing dancers living with Parkinson's disease, as well as some of their neurologists. The interviews were then taken into the studio to inspire and serve as audio for dance pieces. This book is a bilingual compilation of the interviews and poetry in English and Japanese, arranged around themes that arose during the interview process over time, such as diagnosis; coming out to friends and family; shifting identity; management of symptoms through medication; communicating with doctors; dancing; and finding peace while living with PD. Anyone who picks up this immersive book will gain insight into people's deeply personal experiences living and dancing with Parkinson's disease. Foreword by David Leventhal. Translated by Takako Hayakawa

This book explores the experience and value of dancing for people living with the neurodegenerative disorder Parkinson's disease. Linking aesthetic values to wellbeing, Sara Houston articulates the importance of the dancing experience for those with Parkinson's, and argues that the benefits of participatory dance are best understood through the experiences, lives, needs, and challenges of people living with Parkinson's who have chosen to dance. Presenting personal narratives from a study that investigates the experience of people with Parkinson's who dance, intertwined with the social and political contexts in which the dancers live, this volume examines the personal and systemic issues as well as the attitudes and identities that shape people's relationship to dance. Taking this new primary research as a starting point, Dancing with Parkinson's builds an argument for how dance becomes a way of helping people live well with Parkinson's. Every hour in the UK, two people are told they have Parkinson’s disease. For Kate Swindlehurst, the diagnosis was a turning point: refusing to be defined by her condition, she chose instead a radically different path. This is the story of an extraordinary year. It begins with a single tango lesson but grows into an exploration of the dance itself, its history, its music and its incredible healing potential. It is a year in which Kate explored and documented ‘the tango effect’ – the emotional and social benefits of dance on Parkinson’s symptoms. Her personal account echoes what science is beginning to tell us about the powerful and transformative impact of Argentine tango. Intimate and unflinching, The Tango Effect challenges our perceptions of living with a chronic condition. Above all, it takes an honest look at the dark side of the illness while celebrating moments of joy, interconnectedness, acceptance and liberation.

"Meet Hugo, Karen, Alma, Helene, Anne-Marie, Poul, Lone, and Eskild, who go to Parkinson's dance class together. They are characters in this graphic novel, which is based on many stories about Parkinson's. The stories come from participants in Parkinson's dance who have talked about how dance involves bodily, aesthetic experiences, including the feeling of bubbles in their bodies and flying together. Dancing brings joy, energy, and community, and thereby strengthens the will to live, all important when a chronic illness turns your world upside down. This book, a co-produced research-based graphic novel, is designed for use in the fields of arts and health, medical humanities, graphic medicine, and narrative medicine. It is also written for people with Parkinson's, or other chronic diseases, and their families. The book invites dialogue about the existential dimensions of chronic illness, especially Parkinson's, and long-term caregiving"--

(LARGE PRINT EDITION) My foot landed funny and I started to fall. My wife turned just in time to see me catch my balance and avoid what could have been a nasty face plant. She had a familiar look of concern. Once I gracefully recovered, I took her face in my hands and told her, "Every movement's a dance." In 2009, I heard the words "You have Parkinson's disease" spoken to me. No one wants to find out they have a progressive degenerative brain disorder and that they will have it for the rest of their life. Despite the original shock and fear, life has continued to be full of joy and adventure. Of course there are the ever increasing challenges and limitations of living with this disease. After I was diagnosed, I developed a desire to write. This book is a collection of thoughts and stories I have written over the last several years. Thoughts and stories about living with PD, my faith in God and some random thoughts. "Every movement's a dance" is how I have chosen to express this new life that has been thrust upon me. My hope is that you will find something in my poor attempt that will encourage you in your struggles and challenges.

In the last few years, concerns about dancers’ health and the consequences of physical training have increased considerably. The physical requirements and type of training dancers need to achieve to reach their highest level of performance while decreasing the rate of severe injuries has awakened the necessity of more scientific knowledge concerning the area of dance, in part considering its several particularities. Scientific Perspectives and Emerging Developments in Dance and the Performing Arts is a pivotal reference source that provides vital research designed to reduce the gap between the scientific theory and the practice of dance. While highlighting topics such as burnout, mental health, and sport psychology, this publication explores areas such as nutrition, psychology, and education, as well as methods of maintaining the general wellbeing and quality of the health, training, and performance of dancers. This book is ideally designed for dance experts, instructors, sports psychologists, researchers, academicians, and students.

Dancing In Small Spaces written by Leslie A. Davidson and has been published by Brindle & Glass this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-10-25 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

An unstintingly honest and surprisingly humorous memoir that charts a couple’s parallel diagnoses of Parkinson’s and Lewy body dementia. In 2011, Leslie Davidson and her husband Lincoln Ford were enjoying retired life to the fullest as ardent outdoor enthusiasts, energetic travellers, and soon-to-be grandparents. But when Lincoln’s confusion became a concern and Leslie began to experience a hesitant leg and uncontrollable tremors in one arm, a devastating double diagnosis completely changed their life. In this personal and unstintingly honest memoir, Leslie recounts the years that follow the diagnoses—her Parkinson’s and Lincoln’s Lewy body dementia—charting physical changes, mastering medications (and sometimes flubbing it), the logistical puzzles of caregiving, and the steady support of their close-knit community in the small town of Grand Forks in south central British Columbia. She describes her struggle to maintain perspective while questioning what having perspective even means, and the work of being an advocate while needing an advocate. And she explains how, amid all the challenges and tears, shared laughter remained all-important to their survival, especially in times when Lincoln saw her as an imposter. She shares powerful lessons in love, courage, and grace from the man who had always led the way and who, despite the ravages of his illness, in many ways, still did. At once poignant and unflinchingly frank Dancing in Small Spaces is the story of a long and adventurous marriage, of deep gratitude, and, ultimately, of writing one’s way toward understanding and acceptance.

I am on a journey. Mine is a journey with Parkinson's disease. I'm grateful I am not having to go down this road alone. My wife and family and friends have chosen to go with me, even though the road is long and rocky. We have a great guide to show us the way. He knows the way and He has everything we need to make it. He has even prepared a place for us once we have finish the journey. Along this road, I have decided to write down some thoughts and stories. Some are about traveling with Parkinson's, some are about other things. I just enjoy writing. This book is a revision of an earlier book I wrote titled, " Parkinson's Disease ( every movement's a dance)." I have rewritten some of the stories and added some new ones. When I was diagnosed, I was interested in learning about living life with this uninvited and unwelcome companion. I read the stories and thoughts of others that are living with PD. I decided to write some of my thoughts and stories. My hope is that something I write would encourage someone just as what I have read others write has encouraged me. We are not alone in this thing. It is my intension to enjoy the things I have and not to mourn the things I have lost.
