The distinguished career of Marcel Cadieux makes him arguably the most important francophone diplomat and civil servant in Canadian history. Cadieux’s decision to join the Department of External Affairs in 1941 was unconventional for a French Canadian of the time, yet public service became his vocation. Against the backdrop of rising Quebec separatism and the Cold War, he headed the department from 1964 to 1970 and served as Canada’s first francophone ambassador to the United States from 1970 to 1975. Cadieux’s profound belief in the dignity of service speaks eloquently to readers today, when professionalism and expertise are often undervalued.

Language Typology written by Alice Caffarel and has been published by John Benjamins Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

This book is intended as a systemic functional contribution to language typology both for those who would like to understand and describe particular languages against the background of generalizations about a wide range of languages and also for those who would like to develop typological accounts that are based on and embody descriptions of the systems of particular languages (rather than isolated constructions). The book is a unique contribution in at least two respects. On the one hand, it is the first book based on systemic functional theory that is specifically concerned with language typology. On the other hand, the book combines the particular with the general in the description of languages: it presents comparable sketches of particular languages while at the same time identifying generalizations based on the languages described here as well as on other languages. The volume explores eight languages, covering seven language families: French, German, Pitjantjatjara, Tagalog, Telugu, Vietnamese, Chinese, and Japanese.

Europe written by Michael H. MacDonald and has been published by University Press of America this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1996 with History categories.

Michael Macdonald sees Europe (and particularly England, France, and Germany) as the primary foundation of our western way of life, producing many of our greatest thinkers, artists, writers, politicians, and saints. While Europe, A Tantalizing Romance affirms the value of all European cultures, Macdonald chooses to focus mostly on the literary, artistic, philosophical, and theological contributions of England, France, Germany, Russia, central Europe, and Scandinavia, as well as a number of Europe's most visited cities--London, Paris, Berlin, Munich, Vienna, Prague, Moscow, St. Petersburg, Copenhagen, Rome, Florence, Venice, Madrid, and Athens. This book provides readers with a brief, scholarly, practical synthesis of what Europe stands for and has to offer its visitors. Revised numerous times based upon the author's experiences as Director of the European Quarter at Seattle Pacific University, this is an invaluable guide for travelers and non-travelers alike.

Robustness And Fragility Of Political Orders written by Richard Ned Lebow and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-11-24 with Political Science categories.

This volume focuses on the assessments political actors make of the relative fragility and robustness of political orders. The core argument developed and explored throughout its different chapters is that such assessments are subjective and informed by contextually specific historical experiences that have important implications for how leaders respond. Their responses, in turn, feed into processes by which political orders change. The volume's contributions span analyses of political orders at the state, regional and global levels. They demonstrate that assessments of fragility and robustness have important policy implications but that the accuracy of assessments can only be known with certainty ex post facto. The volume will appeal to scholars and advanced students of international relations and comparative politics working on national and international orders.
