Trăim în aceste zile o senzaţie crescândă de neputinţă în faţa istoriei care se scrie cu vieţile noastre. Vedem imperii destrămându-se, războaie civile, regrupări politice, formări de uniuni economice şi monetare. Ce şansă are individul, omul de rând, să influenţeze în vreun fel mersul evenimentelor? Nici măcar votul său, într-o ţară democratică, nu mai pare să însemne aşa de mult ca altădată. Nu este oare omul victima celor puternici, care se folosesc de el, dar iau decizii mult peste capul lui? Cartea Daniel vine să risipească astfel de temeri, proclamând un extraordinar adevăr: „Cel Prea Înalt stăpâneşte peste împărăţia oamenilor, [...] o dă cui îi place, şi înalţă pe ea pe cel mai de jos dintre oameni!”. Ea ne arată cum nişte indivizi aduşi ca robi în Babilon pot – fără să recurgă la jocuri politice, la grupuri de lobby sau la aritmetica voturilor – influenţa istoria şi reuşesc să proclame stăpânirea Dumnezeului lor într-o lume ce se complace într-o auto-proslăvire idolatră. Mai mult, prin profeţiile din partea a doua, Daniel ne avertizează că, deşi istoria va cunoaşte un curs descendent, chemarea oamenilor lui Dumnezeu rămâne aceeaşi: de a-L face cunoscut pe Domnul lor prin ascultare, credincioşie şi renunţarea la orice compromis. În faţa mărturiei vieţii lui Daniel, cine ar mai îndrăzni să spună că tu, cel care ai ales să te alipeşti de Domnul, ca Daniel, oricine ai fi, eşti prea neînsemnat pentru a influenţa spre viaţă realitatea în care trăieşti?

The book presents for the first time a systematic comparison of Origen’s and Jerome’s attitudes toward the Biblical text in the Hebrew and Septuagint versions. And toward the canon of the Scriptures and traces the stages in Jerome’s abandonment of the primacy of the Septuagint. One of the most important accomplishment of this work is Braverman’s discussion of Jerome’s commentary on the story of Susanna and the elders. Also valuable is his comparison of Jerome with earlier (especially Origen), contemporary, and later Church Fathers in their aggadic treatment of Daniel, thus presenting, in effect, a case study in the history of Christian exegesis, as compared with the Jewish exegesis of the Apocrypha, the Pseudepigrapha, Josephus, and rabbinic literature.
