Slavoj i ek and Srecko Horvat combine their critical clout to emphasize the dangers of ignoring Europe's growing wealth gap and the parallel rise in right-wing nationalism, which is directly tied to the fallout from the ongoing financial crisis and its prescription of imposed austerity. To general observers, the European Union's economic woes appear to be its greatest problem, but the real peril is an ongoing ideological–political crisis that threatens an era of instability and reactionary brutality. The fall of communism in 1989 seemed to end the leftist program of universal emancipation. However, nearly a quarter of a century later, the European Union has failed to produce any coherent vision that can mobilize people to action. Until recently, the only ideology receptive to European workers has been the nationalist call to "defend" against immigrant integration. Today, Europe is focused on regulating the development of capitalism and promoting a reactionary conception of its cultural heritage. Yet staying these courses, i ek and Horvat show, only strips Europe of its power and stifles its political ingenuity. The best hope is for Europe to revive and defend its legacy of universal egalitarianism, which benefits all parties by preserving the promise of equal representation.

Heute, am 4. Juni 2002, der dem 24. Tag des vierten Mondmonats im Jahr des Pferdes entspricht, beginne ich mit der Niederschrift meines 34. Buches mit dem Titel "Danke schön Deutschland". Ich werde versuchen dieses Werk während der Zeit der Sommerklausur fertig zu stellen, um es anschließend auf Deutsch übersetzen zu lassen. Die deutsche Übersetzung soll den Deutschen helfen, diejenigen Menschen, die einem Volk von der anderen Seite des Globus angehören und teilweise seit 25 Jahren in Deutschland als Flüchtlinge leben, besser verstehen zu können. Ich weiß nicht, ob bereits jemand vor mir ein ähnliches Buch verfasst hat, um Deutschland und den Deutschen für die gewährte Unterstützung zu danken. Ich selbst jedenfalls empfinde es als meine Pflicht, mit einem solchen Werk meinen Dank an den deutschen Staat und an das deutsche Volk für die meinen Landsleuten erwiesene Großzügigkeit in den letzten 25 Jahren zum Ausdruck zu bringen. Am 22. April 1977 kam ich nach Deutschland. Im April 2002 waren es also genau 25 Jahre, die ich bereits hier verbracht habe - ein Vierteljahrhundert! Was konnten meine Landsleute und ich in diesem Zeitraum für dieses Land tun, und was können wir in Zukunft noch tun? Wie haben wir uns für den Fall vorbereitet, wenn unsere Hilfe irgendwann einmal von unserem Vaterland gefordert wird? Solche Fragen werden vielseitig und unterschiedlich beantwortet; doch eins ist sicher: All dies geschieht nur in Verbindung mit unserer tiefsten Dankbarkeit gegenüber Deutschland.
