Excerpt from Dante and His Italy The plan of the work is simple. Opening with a bird's-eye view of Europe at the critical moment of Dante's life, the ideal date of his vision, it then starts afresh with the beginning of the century that closes with his death, and traverses the period in ever-narrowing circles: Europe, Italy, Florence, and finally Dante and his literary friends in Florence and his hosts in exile. Excerpt from The Forerunners of Dante: A Selection From Italian Poetry Before 1300 Italy is unique among European countries in having twice seen its literature culminate, at epochs, indeed, far remote one from the other; and each time in a poet who by common consent holds rank among the four or five greatest among men of European speech. The older Italian, which we call Latin, and the later Latin, which we call Italian, must not be regarded as parent and child; they are the same individual at various stages of development, as Dante was well aware. Throughout the treatise on language and literature to which he gave the name of De Vulgari Eloque'rztz'éz, the word he uses to designate his own mother-tongue is Latino. The three chief 'romance' languages, as we now style them, are for him French, 'spanish' (including Provencal), and 'latin'; the vernacular of Italy is vzzégm'e latz'num. His instinct was quite right; he would have understood Virgil, in all probability, though he had never read another word of ancient Latin, while Virgil would have understood him, and recognized in his speech something very closely resembling what he had heard every day in the streets of Rome, or the country lanes round Mantua. Excerpt from Dante and His Circle: With the Italian Poets Preceding Him (1100-1200-1300) That there are many defects in this collection, or that the above merit is its defect, or that it has no merits but only defects, are discoveries so sure to be made if necessary (or perhaps here and there in any case), that I may safely leave them in other hands. The series has probably a wider scope than some readers might look for, and includes now and then (though I believe in rare instances) matter which may not meet with universal approval 3 and whose introduction, needed as it is by the literary aim of my work, is I know inconsistent with the principles of pretty bookmaking. My wish has been to give a full and truthful view of early Italian poetry 3 got to make it appear to consist only of certain elements to the exclusion of others equally belonging to it. Of the difficulties I have had to encounter, - the causes of imperfections for which I have no other excuse, - it is the reader's best privilege to remain ignorant; but I may perhaps be pardoned for brie y referring to such among these as concern the exigencies of translation. The task of the translator (and with all humility be it spoken) is one of some self-denial. Often would he avail himself of any special grace of his own idiom and epoch, if only his will belonged to him: often would some cadence serve him but for his author's structure - some structure but for his author'scadence: often the beautiful turn of a stanza must be weakened to adopt some rhyme which will tally, and he sees the poet revelling in abundance of language where himself is scantily supplied. Now he would slight the matter for the music, and now the music for the matter; but no, he must deal to each alike. Some times too a aw in the work galls him, and he would fain remove it, doing for the poet that which his age denied him 3 but no, - it is not in the bond. His path is like that of Aladdin through the enchanted vaults: many are the precious fruits and owers which he must pass by unheeded in search for the lamp alone 3 happy if at last, when brought to light, it does not prove that his old lamp has been exchanged for a new one, - glittering indeed to the eye, but scarcely of the same virtue nor with the same genius at its summons. Excerpt from A Teacher of Dante: And Other Studies in Italian Literature Interesting as is Li Livres dou Tresor from an historical, literary and linguistic stand point, there is nothing in it that throws any light upon the training of Dante. He may very likely have known Li Tresors, for the compilation immediately became extremely pop ular, as is proved by the multitudes of manu scripts, in nearly every dialect of mediaeval French, that have come down to us, and by the Italian paraphrases that were made of it. Il Convito written by Dante Alighieri and has been published by Forgotten Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-11-21 with Self-Help categories.

Dante Alighiere is considered one of the great Italian writers and poets of all time. A philosopher who lived in the thirteenth century, he is most well known for his seminal work La Comedia. While one of his lesser known works, Il Convito: The Banquet of Dante Alighieri remains an important piece of writing from one of the Middle Age's most prominent philosophers. Originally written in the early fourteenth century, this work was never fully completed by Dante. Dante wrote in Italian, the language of the common man, which was highly unusual for writers in the Middle Ages. His book was thus accessible to the masses, and as such was focused on many areas of interest to the commoner. The Banquet is divided into four books which mix poetry and prose. The book opens with Dante's explanation of the need for Il Convito and why he opted to write in the vernacular as opposed to Latin. Books two and three are about the loss of his love Beatrice, and his new love for Lady Philosophy. Book three consists of a lengthy poem praising philosophy, while book four, which makes up the majority of this work, is a discussion of true nobility, and includes the longest hymn to appear in all of Il Convito. The Banquet of Dante Alighieri is truly a wonderful read and the work of a master. Even in its translation to English, the power of Dante's ideas transcends the language used to convey them. This book provides a portrait of the man himself, and is an important contextual piece to Dante's entire body of writing. If one is looking for a companion piece to read alongside La Comedia, Il Convito is perhaps the most illuminating of all Dante's work. As a work of philosophy from one of the great thinkers of the Middle Ages, Il Convito: The Banquet of Dante Alighieri is of tremendous importance. This is a must read for anybody remotely interested in philosophy, and is thus highly recommended. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
