Moving Otherwise examines how contemporary dance practices in Buenos Aires, Argentina enacted politics within climates of political and economic violence from the mid-1960s to the mid-2010s. From the repression of military dictatorships to the precarity of economic crises, contemporary dancers and audiences consistently responded to and reimagined the everyday choreographies that have accompanied Argentina's volatile political history. The titular concept, "moving otherwise" names how both concert dance and its off-stage practice and consumption offer alternatives to and modes to critique the patterns of movement and bodily comportment that shape everyday life in contexts marked by violence. Drawing on archival research based in institutional and private collections, over fifty interviews with dancers and choreographers, and the author's embodied experiences as a collaborator and performer with active groups, the book analyzes how a wide range of practices moved otherwise, including concert works, community dance initiatives, and the everyday labor that animates dance. It demonstrates how these diverse practices represent, resist, and remember violence and engender new forms of social mobilization on and off the theatrical stage. As the first book length critical study of Argentine contemporary dance, it introduces a breadth of choreographers to an English speaking audience, including Ana Kamien, Susana Zimmermann, Estela Maris, Alejandro Cervera, Renate Schottelius, Susana Tambutti, Silvia Hodgers, and Silvia Vladimivsky. It also considers previously undocumented aspects of Argentine dance history, including crossings between contemporary dancers and 1970s leftist political militancy, Argentine dance labor movements, political protest, and the prominence of tango themes in contemporary dance works that address the memory of political violence. Contemporary dance, the book demonstrates, has a rich and diverse history of political engagement in Argentina.

Si algún sentido tiene este libro, confiesa el autor, es revisar “al fino” aquel año trágico (55-56), hecho de mitades, que enfrentó a dos Argentinas. Una grieta existencial, peronismo-antiperonismo, que interpela el devenir de un país. En ese punto, “Junios” es un texto revelador: Cristian Vitale se propone documentar, primero, y reflexionar, después, sobre el origen del oprobioso ciclo de violencia que arrojó consecuencias dolorosas en el derrotero nacional. Probado el oficio de exhumar la historia, Vitale esta vez despliega un pormenorizado relato que comienza con los bombardeos sobre Plaza de Mayo y otros sitios de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires ejecutados por la Aviación Naval y la Fuerza Aérea en junio de 1955, que explican de alguna manera la revolución del General Juan José Valle, producida justamente un año después de aquel espanto. Sobre esa trama general, que por sí sola justificaba el libro, Vitale además recupera detalladamente, mediante entrevistas personales y trabajo de archivo, experiencias militantes poco conocidas que fueron parte central del frustrado levantamiento de Valle, y cuyos protagonistas pagaron con sus vidas por ello. “Junios” implica en suma una forma de asumir la memoria identitaria, emocional y política del pueblo argentino, en un momento clave y complejo de su historia.

This book raises the question of what an Indigenous church is and how its members define their ties of affiliation or separation. Establishing a pioneering dialogue between Amazonian and Gran Chaco studies on Indigenous Christianity, the contributions address historical processes, cosmological conceptions, ritual practices, leadership dynamics, and material formations involved in the creation and diversification of Indigenous churches. Instead of focusing on the study of missionary ideologies and praxis, the book explores Indigenous peoples' interpretations of Christianity and the institutional arrangements they make to create, expand, or dismantle their churches. In doing so, the volume offers a South American contribution to the theoretical project of the anthropology of Christianity, especially as it relates to the issue of denominationalism and inter-denominational relations.

Esta es la publicación de la tesis de doctorado defendida ante la Facultad de Filosofía y Letras de la Universidad de Buenos Aires en 2007. Esta tesis busca profundizar el conocimiento de un área del teatro argentino, el teatro nativista, que ha permanecido vigente a lo largo de un extenso período. Su presencia, productividad y evolución constituyeron un aspecto fundamental de nuestro teatro desde su surgimiento en 1896 hasta la década del cincuenta, especialmente durante el primer y segundo gobierno peronista. Un segundo aporte de esta tesis es que abordamos la búsqueda de la presencia del procedimiento del costumbrismo y el análisis de su significación en diferentes poéticas. Este procedimiento ha estado presente en nuestro teatro desde sus orígenes hasta la actualidad, signando y caracterizando al teatro argentino, que a lo largo de su historia siempre ha tenido un matiz costumbrista.
