These evocative images of rural life form a narrative thread with the not-so-distant past. Fitzgerald's camera focuses on the back roads of the countryside, and records intimate moments of people in their cottages and farms. The dimly-lit rooms of Ireland prior to the arrival of electricity are eloquently remembered in his first-hand account of his childhood years; his early experiences observing light and shadow in a world illuminated by candlelight. The result is a unique album that is both compelling and graceful.

The Dark written by John McGahern and has been published by Faber & Faber this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-02-19 with Fiction categories.

The Dark, John McGahern's second novel, is set in rural Ireland. The themes - that McGahern has made his own - are adolescence and a guilty, yet uncontrollable sexuality that is contorted and twisted by both a puritanical state religion and a strange, powerful and ambiguous relationship between son and widower father. Against a background evoked with quiet, undemonstrative mastery, McGahern explores with precision and tenderness a human situation, superficially very ordinary, but inwardly an agony of longing and despair. 'It creates a small world indelibly and without recourse to deliberate heightening effects of prose. There are few writers whose work can be anticipated with such confidence and excitement.' Sunday Times 'One of the greatest writers of our era.' Hilary Mantel, New Statesman

This is the story of a haunted Irish childhood. The setting is Derry in the Northern Ireland of the 40s and 50s, fraught with political hatred, family secrets and lethal intrigue. As a young boy tries to make sense of life, poverty and violence shift and obscure the facts; meanwhile his night-time reading of Irish legends weaves enchantment through reality. Claustrophobic but lyrically charged, breathtakingly sad but vibrant and unforgettable, this is one of the finest books about growing up – in Ireland or anywhere – that has ever been written. The term Black and Tans refers to the Royal Irish Constabulary Reserve Force, which was one of two paramilitary forces employed by the Royal Irish Constabulary from 1920 to 1921 to suppress revolution in Ireland by targeting the IRA. Although only a small proportion of the British forces in Ireland, The Black and Tans were the fiercest and most feared, sent in March of 1920 by Lloyd George's Coalition Cabinet to make Ireland "a hell for rebels to live in." They could arrest and imprison anyone at any time. They murdered civilians. They wore a strange mixture of dark green tunis, khaki trousers, black belts, and odd headgear. Richard Bennett, a Lt. Colonel in the Army Bureau of Current Affairs, provides an accurate account of this harrowing period in Anglo-Irish history. - Publisher
