As the late twentieth-century fascination with rounded shapes, organic influences, and plastics fades, interior designers are increasingly drawn to deep colors, polished woods, velvets, furs, leather, dark metals, and brick that have a nostalgic quality—materials used liberally in centuries gone by. Efforts to shape a more authentic, less austere present by creating an idealized version of the past have begun to appear in commercial and residential design throughout the country and abroad. Dark Nostalgia presents twenty-six projects that exemplify the smooth incorporation of evocative historic detail into current interiors. Public spaces, including New York’s famous Royalton Hotel lobby renovation, the Clift Hotel bar in San Francisco, and Alain Ducasse’s newest restaurant, Adour, as well as private residences and smaller, intimate restaurants and clubs by cutting-edge designers, including AvroKO, David Rockwell, Roman & Williams, Julian Schnabel, Philippe Starck, and Adam Tihany, demonstrate the many successful ways this trend towards a dark nostalgia has been incorporated in recent designs.

Bringing together scholars from Russia, the United States and Europe, this collection of essays is the first to explore the slippery phenomenon of post-Soviet nostalgia by studying it as a discursive practice serving a wide variety of ideological agendas. The authors demonstrate how feelings of loss and displacement in post-Soviet Russia are turned into effective tools of state building and national mobilization, as well as into weapons for local resistance and the assertion of individual autonomy. Drawing on novels, memoirs, documentaries, photographs and Soviet commodities, Post-Soviet Nostalgia is an invaluable resource for historians, literary scholars and anthropologists interested in how Russia comes to terms with its Soviet past.

3rd Edition-Revised | Age Level: 14 and up | Grade Level: 9 and upThe fate of his entire family seemed to be resting in his hands! For Phillip, living on the streets has never been easy, especially in New York City. Then again, when he volunteered to find his father, who has been missing for the last two and half years, stolen away in the middle of the night by a mysterious stranger, he knew the chance he was taking. After all, he was four hundred years and half a world away from home.To make matters worse, it seemed like those he'd been hiding from all this time, may have just found him- and he knew for a fact that they wanted him just as dead as the rest of his family. Steal his country and he'll hate you. Steal his time and he'll swear revenge, but steal his father, scatter his family and banish him to another time to steal his family's throne- hell hath no fury as an exiled prince scorned. An Excerpt from Heir of Nostalgia:"A dark mastiff," whispered Maggie, keeping the beast in sight the entire time. "In packs they are unstoppable. By themselves, however... We used to hunt them for sport," she said.At this point Phillip jumped in, "Surely you can do something. Look what you did with Feathers.""Mastiff and corbie, Phillip, two completely different creatures. Mastiffs are drawn from shadow and shade, sharp corners and angles. Corbie on the other hand." She was about to say something more when the wolf lunged. With one arm Maggie swept Theo and Phillip to one side, while striking out with her 'stick.' As soon as the 'tree branch' struck the great wolf it snapped in two and burst into flame and cinders. Steaming blood the color of night, the beast snapped wildly at them and withdrew.Fresh scarlet ran like a tear down Maggie's right cheek. She'd been quick, but the wolf had been quicker."Maggie!" Phillip cried, seeing the ragged gash across her forearm.ReviewsA new talent, states E. Finlayson of Staffordshire, UK. This book can be considered equally as a young adult book or an adult book. The plot is out of the usual and the writer builds both tension and atmosphere skillfully. Like other reviewers I could hardly put it down until it was finished, and I hope very much for a Book 2.AMAZING! Says Ron You feel like your right there beside the characters throughout their whole journey. I would HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone ready for an adventure. There were times while reading this book that my heart would be beating faster. Can't wait for the next book in the series! HIGHLY recommend this book!

Sites Of Conscience written by Elisabeth Punzi and has been published by UBC Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-03-15 with Social Science categories.

Into the twenty-first century, millions of disabled people and people experiencing mental distress were segregated from the rest of society and confined to residential institutions. Deinstitutionalization – the closure of these sites and integration of former residents into the community – has become increasingly commonplace. But this project is unfinished. Sites of Conscience explores use of the concept of sites of conscience, which involves place-based memory activities such as walking tours, survivor-authored social histories, and performances and artistic works in or generated from sites of systemic suffering and injustice. These activities offer new ways to move forward from the unfinished deinstitutionalization project and its failures. Covering diverse national contexts, this volume proposes that acknowledging the memories and lived experiences of former residents – and keeping histories and social heritage of institutions alive rather than simply closing sites – holds the greatest potential for recognition, accountability, and action.

In recent years, historical witnessing has emerged as a category of "museum object." Audiovisual recordings of interviews with individuals remembering events of historical importance are now integral to the collections and research activities of museums. They have also become important components in narrative and exhibition design strategies. With a focus on Holocaust museums, this study scrutinizes for the first time the new global phenomenon of the "musealization" of the witness to history, exploring the processes, prerequisites, and consequences of the transformation of video testimonies into exhibits.

This book examines American screen culture and its power to create and sustain values. Looking specifically at the ways in which nostalgia colors the visions of American life, essays explore contemporary American ideology as it is created and sustained by the screen. Nostalgia is omnipresent, selling a version of America that arguably never existed. Current socio-cultural challenges are played out onscreen and placed within the historical milieu through a nostalgic lens which is tempered by contemporary conservatism. Essays reveal not only the visual catalog of recognizable motifs but also how these are used to temper the uncertainty of contemporary crises. Media covered spans from 1939's Gone with the Wind, to Stranger Things, The Americans, Twin Peaks, the Fallout franchise and more.

Nostalgia Now written by Michael Hviid Jacobsen and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-02-25 with Social Science categories.

This volume explores the nature of nostalgia as an important emotion in contemporary society and social theory. Situated between the ‘sociology of emotions’ and ‘nostalgia studies’, it considers the reasons for which nostalgia appears to be becoming an increasingly significant and debated emotion in late-modern culture. With chapters offering studies of nostalgia at micro-, meso- and macro-levels of society, it offers insights into the rise to prominence of nostalgia and the attendant consequences. Thematically organised and examining the role of nostalgia on an individual level – in the lives of concrete individuals – as well as analysing its function on a more historical social level as a collective and culturally shared emotion, Nostalgia Now brings together the latest empirical and theoretical work on an important contemporary emotion and proposes new agendas for research. As such, it will appeal to scholars of sociology, social theory, psychology and cultural studies with interests in the emotions.
