In Darkness and Secrecy brings together ethnographic examinations of Amazonian assault sorcery, witchcraft, and injurious magic, or “dark shamanism.” Anthropological reflections on South American shamanism have tended to emphasize shamans’ healing powers and positive influence. This collection challenges that assumption by showing that dark shamans are, in many Amazonian cultures, quite different from shamanic healers and prophets. Assault sorcery, in particular, involves violence resulting in physical harm or even death. While highlighting the distinctiveness of such practices, In Darkness and Secrecy reveals them as no less relevant to the continuation of culture and society than curing and prophecy. The contributors suggest that the persistence of dark shamanism can be understood as a form of engagement with modernity. These essays, by leading anthropologists of South American shamanism, consider assault sorcery as it is practiced in parts of Brazil, Guyana, Venezuela, and Peru. They analyze the social and political dynamics of witchcraft and sorcery and their relation to cosmology, mythology, ritual, and other forms of symbolic violence and aggression in each society studied. They also discuss the relations of witchcraft and sorcery to interethnic contact and the ways that shamanic power may be co-opted by the state. In Darkness and Secrecy includes reflections on the ethical and practical implications of ethnographic investigation of violent cultural practices. Contributors. Dominique Buchillet, Carlos Fausto, Michael Heckenberger, Elsje Lagrou, E. Jean Langdon, George Mentore, Donald Pollock, Fernando Santos-Granero, Pamela J. The word “shaman” means “one who sees in the dark.” Shamans consciously choose to live in two different worlds at the same time. They have one foot here in the everyday world and one foot in the world of the spirits. The fact is, we all live in these two different worlds, but are commonly not aware of the other, less visible one. This world does not exist in some other place, but is right beside us, just outside of our usual perceptions. Seeing in the Dark is a definitive source for personal shamanism and not only provides the tools and techniques of the shaman, but presents the wisdom tradition, awareness paradigm, and shamanic way of life. The powerful shamanic path has weathered the cataclysmic changes of over 50,000 years of human history and is even more vital and relevant today. In times when stress, tension, and the fast pace of life overwhelm us, this path shows us how to slow down, reconnect to the sacred, and harness our personal power—skills that will be needed for the uncertain days ahead. Included in this book are over 100 easy-to-follow exercises that teach important survival skills for the coming changes of 2012 and beyond.

Intentional acts of “assault sorcery”, involving operations of extracting the souls of unsuspecting victims or eliminating one’s antagonists, are central to the perceived proliferation of occult threats and shamanic assassins in Tuva, Siberia. Following the restoration of shamanism as an official religion in the region, indigenous spiritual practitioners have propagated a vindictive strand of rituals, associated with supernatural retaliation and political assassination. This book probes the unforeseen implications of state-sanctioned appropriations of religious revival, through an unsettling context of encounters with various agencies embodying “dark shamanism”. The invisible presence of this shamanic complex is manifested in the book’s presentation of a shaman’s thoughts about an epidemic of curses, his counter-cursing rituals for Russians and ethnic Tuvans, and his dialogues with dead shamanic ancestors and spectres experiencing ideological tensions.

Few religious traditions have generated such diversity and stirred imaginations as shamanism. In their engagements with other worlds, shamans have conversed with animals and ancestors and have been empowered with the knowledge to heal patients, advise hunters, and curse enemies. Still other shamans, aided by rhythmic music or powerful plant helpers, undertake journeys into different realities where their actions negotiate harmony between human and other than human communities. Once relegated to paintings on cave walls, today Shamanism can be seen in performances at rave clubs and psychotherapeutic clinics. The Historical Dictionary of Shamanism has the duel task of exploring the common ground of shamanic traditions and evaluating the diversity of both traditional indigenous communities and individual Western seekers. This is done in an introduction, a bibliography, a chronology, and hundreds of cross-referenced dictionary entries, which explore the consistent features of a variety of shamans, the purposes shamanism serves, the function and activities of the shaman, and the cultural contexts in which they make sense.

Dark Shaman turns that legend into a fast-paced murder mystery in which Alaska State Trooper Sergeant Robert Sable, along with help from the FBI, investigates the ritualistic deaths of school children. Rumors hint to an absurd idea that the children were slaughtered by Auktelchnīk, a powerful evil shaman who somehow has been resurrected. As more bodies turn up, Sable and his partners try to find the connections between the victims and their killer by interrogating local rapists, pedophiles and sexual deviants. Someone begins killing off the suspects one by one. Is this a new killer, an irate parent or someone else? Along the way, Sable encounters a bevy of nasty characters who could only be found in Alaska.
