Selten sind die Kreuzzüge je positiver bewertet worden als hier; nie zuvor wurde von Christen so aggressiv zur Gewalt gegen Andersgläubige aufgerufen. Zu Beginn dieser Arbeit steht eine Auseinandersetzung mit der Person Bernhard von Clairvaux. Hierfür war es nötig, auf Beschreibungen und Urteile zurück zu greifen, wie sie unterschiedlicher kaum sein könnten. Das hat vor allem damit zu tun, dass es sich bei Bernhard um eine im katholischen Sinne 'heilige' Figur handelt, was zu dem Ergebnis führt, dass die Auseinandersetzung mit seiner Person selbst in jüngster Zeit oft erschreckend unkritische und hagiographische Züge aufweist. Dem gegenüber steht oft eine 'moderne' Herangehensweise, die Gefahr zu laufen scheint, den zeitlichen Kontext und die hochmittelalterliche Vorstellungswelt aus dem Auge zu verlieren und zu 'modern' zu urteilen. In dieser Arbeit ist es hoffentlich gelungen, beide Pole gegenüber zu stellen und gleichzeitig den Spielraum für historische Interpretationen zu belassen.

Der Zisterzienser Bernhard von Clairvaux spielte eine außergewöhnliche Rolle in dem an Veränderungen und Umbrüchen reichen 12. Jahrhundert. Untrennbar verbunden ist sein Name mit dem zweiten Kreuzzug, in dem mit den Templern zum ersten Mal eine Ritterschaft auf den Plan getreten war, die sich zugleich als christlicher Orden begriff. Einen wesentlichen Beitrag zu dem Erfolg und dem starken Zulauf, den der Templerorden erfuhr, leistete Bernhard mit der "Lobrede auf das neue Rittertum". Selten sind die Kreuzzüge positiver bewertet worden als hier; nie zuvor wurde von einem Christen so aggressiv zur Gewalt gegen Andersgläubige aufgerufen. Neben der Untersuchung der vorliegenden Quelle bezüglich der Darstellung von Gewalt richtet sich der Fokus dieser Arbeit vor allem auf die Frage, auf welche Art und Weise die Gewalt in einem christlichen Kontext gerechtfertigt werden konnte und wie sie bewertet wurde. Zu beachten ist dabei zunächst, dass Bernhards Schrift keinen beschreibenden Charakter hat, ihr also kein reales Ereignis zugrunde lag, sondern dass es sich hier um einen reinen Aufruf zur Gewalt handelt. Dem entsprechend sind die Gewaltdarstellungen nicht detaillierter, sondern eher allgemeiner und abstrakter Art. Aus Gründen, die in der Arbeit erläutert werden, beschränkt sich die Untersuchung der Schrift auf die ersten vier Kapitel. Dabei spielt allein physische Gewalt eine Rolle; psychische und strukturelle Gewalt bleiben ausgeblendet, auch wenn gerade die vorliegende Quelle in dieser Hinsicht wohl sehr interessante Einsichten liefern könnte. Dazu ist hier aber kein Platz. Zu Beginn dieser Arbeit steht eine Auseinandersetzung mit der Person Bernhard von Clairvaux. This major study includes a translation of all testimony heard during the Templar trial in Cyprus in 1310 or 1311. The trial is of immense importance to the study of the history of the order because of the large number of Templar witnesses, seventy-six, many of high rank, and the ancillary testimony of fifty-six noblemen, burghers, and members, of the regular and secular clergy. What makes the trial especially significant is that torture appears not to have been used, allowing witnesses to give their opinion of the order free of the usual constraint. A large amount of testimony omitted from the Latin edition appears here for the first time. Witnesses are cross-referenced to other Templar trials, or to Cypriot notarial documents. The work is completed by photographs, maps, an exhaustive index, lists of witnesses, and bibliography.

From their humble beginnings in Jerusalem as a late eleventh-century hospital and an early twelfth-century pilgrim escort, Hospitallers and Templars evolved into international military religious orders, engaged in numerous charitable, economic, and military pursuits. At the heart of each of these communities, and in many ways a mirror of their growth and adaptability, was a central convent led by several high officials and headquartered first in Jerusalem (to 1187), then in Acre (1191-1291), and then on Cyprus (since 1291), from where the Hospitallers conquered Rhodes (1306-1310), and where fate in the form of a heresy trial caught up with the Templars. The history, organization, and personnel of these two central convents to 1310 are the subject of this comparative study.

In Part I the author draws on classical authors to illustrate three causes of error in his time and underscores the need for an integral understanding of the signification of terms. In Part II he proposes six themes: a new classification of signs; a theory that common terms signify principally objects, not concepts; connotation as natural signification; common terms signifying an entity and a nonentity are equivocal; terms can lose their signification; a non-Aristotelian classification of equivocation in six modes. Bacon was a very original semanticist and some of his theories helped pave the way for Ockham a few decades later. This treatise opens many windows on to the debate on semantics in the late 13th century.
