Mit der Verbreitung der Porträtfotografie und der Entstehung einer öffentlichen Bilderwelt in der Moderne entdeckten Schriftsteller die Fotografie als Medium der Selbstdarstellung - und Verleger als ideales Werbemittel. Die Entwicklung des Autorenfotos als Mittel der Literaturvermittlung im 19. Jahrhundert bildet den Ausgangspunkt dieser Studie. Auf der Grundlage von Verlagsprospekten und Buchumschlägen seit 1900 wird die Entwicklung der Ikonografie des Autors ebenso wie die legitimer Kontexte der Bildverwendung erstmals systematisch untersucht und dabei der Bedeutungswandel des Autorenfotos zwischen inhaltlicher Vermittlung und Marketing nachgezeichnet. Die Inszenierung des Klassikers ist dabei ein Schwerpunkt: Am Beispiel von Hermann Hesse und Franz Kafka wird nachgewiesen, dass die fotografische Inszenierung des Autors eine Form der symbolischen Kanonisierung ist - und welche Rolle Literaturverlage dabei spielen. Die Arbeit verbindet buchwissenschaftliche Fragestellungen mit Impulsen aus der aktuellen Bildforschung und liefert einen Beitrag zur literaturwissenschaftlichen Forschungsdebatte um die Inszenierung des Autors.

Building upon recent German Studies research addressing the industrialization of printing, the expansion of publication venues, new publication formats, and readership, Market Strategies maps a networked literary field in which the production, promotion, and reception of literature from the Enlightenment to World War II emerges as a collaborative enterprise driven by the interests of actors and institutions. These essays demonstrate how a network of authors, editors, and publishers devised mutually beneficial and, at times, conflicting strategies for achieving success on the rapidly evolving nineteenth-century German literary market. In particular, the contributors consider how these actors shaped a nineteenth-century literary market, which included the Jewish press, highbrow and lowbrow genres, and modernist publications. They explore the tensions felt as markets expanded and restrictions were imposed, which yielded resilient new publication strategies, fostered criticism, and led to formal innovations. The volume thus serves as major contribution to interdisciplinary research in nineteenth-century German literary, media, and cultural studies.

Authors and the World traces how four core 'modes of authorship' have developed and inflect one another in modern Germany through a series of twenty different case studies, including the work of Thomas Mann, Günter Grass, Anna Seghers, Walter Höllerer, Felicitas Hoppe and Katja Petrowskaja, and original interview material with contemporary writers Ulrike Draesner, Olga Martynova and Ulrike Almut Sandig. 'Modes of authorship' are attitudes taken towards being an author that can be seen both in what an individual author does and in how a particular literary tradition or trend is perceived and mediated by others both within and beyond Pierre Bourdieu's literary field. Consequently, they deliberately straddle questions of literary production and reception. Literature and film generate symbolic as well as economic capital. As such, aesthetic productions exist in various contexts following contrasting rules. Which role(s) do authors and filmmakers play in positioning themselves in this conflictive relation? Bringing together fourteen essays by scholars from Germany, the USA, the UK and France, this volume examines the multiple ways in which the progressive (self-) fashioning of authors and filmmakers interacts with the public sphere, generating authorial postures, and thus arouses attention.
