Eine kunstwissenschaftliche Untersuchung zur Führer- und Funktionärsikonografie im Dritten Reich gab es bis heute nicht, obwohl sich gerade in den Porträts der NS-Machthaber nationalsozialistisches Kunstwollen wiederfindet. Nicht nur Hitlers Porträt wird hier untersucht. Die vorliegende Arbeit befasst sich ausführlich mit dem Bilderkult, der um die Nazigrössen wie Göring, Goebbels und Heydrich getrieben wurde. Ebenfalls das Bild der Frau kann um die Facetten "keusche Helferin" und "dominante Führerin" erweitert werden. Die künstlerische Auseinandersetzung mit den meisten NS-Führern endet bekanntlich 1945. In der Kunst der Bundesrepublik ist Hitlers Gesicht ein Markenzeichen geblieben. Die Untersuchung zeigt, dass der mit allen Schrecken des Dritten Reiches gleichgesetzte Hitler jetzt als Sinnbild des Bösen nahezu die Bedeutung hat, die vormals nur der Figur des Teufels zukam.

This book examines the construction, dissemination, and reception of the Stalin cult in East Germany from the end of World War II to the building of the Berlin Wall. By exporting Stalin’s cult to the Eastern bloc, Moscow aspired to symbolically unite the communist states in an imagined cult community pivoting around the Soviet leader. Based on Russian and German archives, this work analyzes the emergence of the Stalin cult’s transnational dimension. On one hand, it looks at how Soviet representations of power were transferred and adapted in the former “enemy’s” country. On the other hand, it reconstructs “spaces of agency” where different agents and generations interpreted, manipulated, and used the Stalin cult to negotiate social identities and everyday life. This study reveals both the dynamics of Stalinism as a political system after the Cold War began and the foundations of modern politics through mass mobilization, emotional bonding, and social engineering in Soviet-style societies. As an integral part of the global history of communism, this book opens up a comparative, entangled perspective on the ways in which veneration of Stalin and other nationalistic cults were established in socialist states across Europe and beyond.

Zum achtzigsten Jahrestag des inszenierten Kunstspektakels widmet sich dieses Buch der Popularisierung von Kunst und der Ästhetik der Politik im Dritten Reich. Zum Vorschein kommt eine von heute aus irritierende Spielart der bekannten Forderung "Kunst für alle" unter den Bedingungen der Diktatur: jenseits einer demokratischen Gesellschaft und jenseits der Freiheit der Kunst. Based on two international conferences held at Cornell University and the Freie Universität of Berlin in 2010 and 2015, this volume is the first ever to explicitly address the destruction of plaster cast collections of ancient Mediterranean and Western sculpture. Focusing on Europe, the Americas, and Japan, art historians, archaeologists and a literary scholar discuss how different museum and academic traditions – national as well as disciplinary –, notions of value and authenticity, or colonialism impacted the fate of collections. The texts offer detailed documentation of degrees of destruction by spectacular acts of defacement, demolition, discarding, or neglect. They also shed light on the accompanying discourses regarding aesthetic ideals, political ideologies, educational and scholarly practices, or race. With destruction being understood as a critical part of reception, the histories of cast collections defy the traditional, homogenous narrative of rise and decline. Their diverse histories provide critical evidence for rethinking the use and display of plaster cast collections in the contemporary moment.
