In dieser Arbeit werden Filme untersucht, die immer auf literarischen Vorlagen beruhen und die immer Musik von Johann Sebastian Bach als Filmmusik enthalten. Dabei geht es darum, zu untersuchen, wie sich die Romanvorlage und der fertige Film gegenseitig interpretieren, um dann auf diesen Ergebnissen aufbauend zu schauen, inwiefern die Musik von Johann Sebastian Bach bedeutungsstiftend im Sinne des Regisseurs auch auf akustischer Ebene auf das Auditorium wirken kann. Die untersuchte Musik ist ebenso vielfältig wie die Literaturvorlagen, es gibt u.a. Klavier-, Cello- und Violinmusik, aber auch Vokalwerke. Die Primärliteratur entstammt der deutschen, französischen, österreichischen, russischen und englischen Literatur. Es sind verschiedene Film-Genres enthalten, vom Abenteuerfilm bis zum Gesellschaftsdrama. Die Produktionen sind ebenfalls international. Fünf Filme sind in umfangreichen Abschnitten sehr genau auf Figuren, Figurenkonstellation und narrative Struktur hin untersucht. Und in zwei Kapiteln stehen vor allem Filme im Mittelpunkt, die ein besonderes Werk Bachs enthalten, einmal Toccata und Fuge in d-Moll, BWV 565, und einmal die Goldberg-Variationen, BWV 988. This book, entitled Thin Films on Glass, is one of a series reporting on research and development activities on products and processes conducted by the Schott Group. The scientifically founded development of new products and technical pro cesses has traditionally been of vital importance to Schott and has always been performed on a scale determined by the prospects for application of our special glasses. Since the reconstruction of the Schott Glaswerke in Mainz, the scale has increased enormously. The range of expert knowledge required could never have been supplied by Schott alone. Artists, scholars, filmmakers, and writers revisit the films of Danièle Huillet and Jean-Marie Straub. Jean-Marie Straub (b. 1933) and Danièle Huillet (1936–2006) met in Paris in 1954. Straub wanted to make a film about Johann Sebastian Bach, to which Huillet thought: “He's planning to do far too much; he won't manage it alone.” It was the beginning of a fifty-year collaboration, which brought about one of the most unconventional and controversial bodies of work in modern cinema. Tell it to the Stones presents variations from a prolonged re-encounter with Huillet and Straub's work that was sparked by a three-month exhibition, complete cinema retrospective, workshops, and music performances in Berlin in the fall of 2017. Contributing artists, scholars, filmmakers, and writers have revisited this collective experience in new texts, revised transcripts, conceptual essays, and visual montages. Die Kinematographie entwickelte sich innerhalb weniger Jahre von einem technischen Kuriosum zu einer florierenden Freizeitindustrie. Bereits um 1905 offneten in Berlin die ersten Kinotheater ihre Pforten. Eine rasante Entwicklung folgte, die in den zwanziger Jahren in einer Blute des deutschen Films gipfelte. Der Buchhandel hingegen kampfte nach Ende des Ersten Weltkrieges mit Absatzschwachen, besonders in seiner traditionellen Zielgruppe, dem Burgertum. Von einer "Bucherkrise" war schnell die Rede und vom Untergang der Buchkultur. Der Film, darauf schien vieles hinzudeuten, hatte das Buch als wichtigstes Informations- und Unterhaltungsmedium abgelost. Wie reagierten Verleger und Buchhandler auf den Siegeszug der Kinematographie? Welche Strategien entwickelten sie im Umgang mit dem angeblichen Konkurrenten? Jasmin Langes Studie rekonstruiert erstmals die Kino-Debatte im Buchhandel von ihren Anfangen im Kaiserreich bis zum Ende der Weimarer Republik. Daruber hinaus wird die Auswirkung des Films auf drei wesentliche Aspekte der Verlagsarbeit untersucht: Rechteverwertung, Programmpolitik und Buchwerbung. Diese interdisziplinare Untersuchung zeigt, welche Geschaftsstrategien der Buchhandel entwickelte, um am Erfolg des neuen Mediums zu partizipieren.
