Die frühesten Geschichten über Mittelerde, die Tolkien seit 1916 aufschrieb, sind hier gesammelt. Im »Herrn der Ringe« wird ständig auf sie hingewiesen, denn sie sind die Götter- und Heldensagen der Welt Mittelerde. Die beiden Bände sind auch einzeln erhältlich. Einst landete Eriol der Seefahrer im fernen Westen auf Tol Eressa, der Einsamen Insel, wo die Elben wohnen. Gastfreundschaft wurde ihm gern gewährt, denn selten fand ein Sterblicher den verborgenen Weg und keiner kennt die Wunder, welche seit Anbeginn der Welt geschahen. Am abendlichen Feuer lauschte er begierig den Geschichten von Ilúvatar und seinem Weltplan, von der Musik der Ainur, von der Ankunft der Valar und der Gründung ihres Segensreiches, von Melko, der sich mit der Spinnerin der Nacht verbündete und großes Leid über die Welt gebracht hat, von der Ankunft der Elben und der Erbauung Kôrs, der glänzenden Stadt, von den Noldoli und ihrer Unzufriedenheit, von Aules großer Arbeit, von der Verhüllung Valinors und der Ankunft der Menschen. Unzählige Geschichten hat Tolkien erdacht, als er die Götter- und Heldensagen von Mittelerde niederschrieb. Und oft finden sich nur Spuren von ihnen, oft nur fremdklingende Namen wie ferne Echos vergangener Zeiten im »Herrn der Ringe«, der einzigen großen Geschichte, die er vollendet hat. Es waren Geschichten, die damals, als die Hobbits auf Mittelerde lebten, bereits als verloren galten. Im legendären »Buch der verschollenen Geschichten«, dem ältesten Weltentwurf Tolkiens, älter noch als »das Silmarillion«, sind sie aufgezeichnet. Der Zugang ist schwierig, denn die Textsituation ist, da Tolkien die Geschichten häufig mehrfach überarbeitet hat, nicht immer eindeutig. Doch die Mühe, die der Herausgeber Christopher Tolkien auf die Entzifferung und Rekonstruktion verwendet hat, wird reichlich belohnt. Einige der schönsten Geschichten aus Mittelerde werden so zum erstenmal zugänglich, und zum letztenmal kann man die Stimme J.R.R. Tolkiens hören. Der Herausgeber dieses auf zwei Bände angelegten Geschichtsbuches ist der jüngste Sohn J.R.R. Tolkiens, Christopher - ein Mittelerde-Kenner, wie es keinen zweiten gibt. In jahrelanger Arbeit hat er die teilweise fragmentarischen, teilweise nur mühsam zu entziffernden handschriftlichen Notate geordnet, mit ausführlichen Kommentaren (vor allem zur Etymologie der Elbensprachen) versehen und nach dem Plan des Vaters zusammengestellt. Zwei ausführliche Register machen den Band zu einem unentbehrlichen Nachschlagewerk; zwei bisher unveröffentlichte Weltskizzen illustrieren die Erzählungen.
