Er soll in die große Stadt Assyriens - nach Ninive - ziehen und da den Feinden Israels deren Vernichtung prophezeien. Jona weiß nur eins, das will er nicht tun und er läuft weg, in die entgegengesetzte Richtung, nach Jaffa und dann mit dem Schiff nach Tarsis (vermutlich im heutigen Spanien), um sich dort vor Gott zu verstecken. Aber Gott lässt einen gewaltigen Sturm aufkommen, welcher das Schiff zu versenken droht. Die heidnischen Seeleute beginnen zu ihren Göttern um Beistand zu flehen, Jona aber versteckt sich im tiefsten Schiffsraum. Die Matrosen werfen das Los, wessen Schuld für ihre Misere verantwortlich ist und das Los fällt auf Jona. Jona erzählt nun von Gottes Größe und dessen Macht und warum er geflohen ist und das der Sturm wegen ihm tobt. Die Seeleute werfen Jona auf dessen Bitte in das tosende Meer und sofort beruhigt sich der Sturm. Sie bekennen sich zu Gott, beten und entrichten Brandopfer.
