Friedrich von Logau ist der wichtigste deutschsprachige Epigrammatiker des 17. Jahrhunderts. Auf den Titeln seiner Sammlungen erscheint der Autorname anagrammatisch verschrieben zu Salomon (i.e. Friedrich) von Golaw. Salomon "redete dreitausend Sprüche" (1 Könige 5,12), und Logau legt 1654 sein zu ebensolcher Größe ausgewachsenes Werk der Epigramme vor: Deutscher Sinn-Getichte Drey Tausend Das sind Kurzsatiren, Gelegenheitsgedichte, Devisen und lyrische Bemerkungen in Überzahl: ein Thesaurus kritisch reflektierten Wissens seiner Zeit. Da geht es aber nicht mehr um salomonische Weisheit in ihrer Urteilssicherheit und Apodiktik. Das Epigramm ist im 17. Jahrhundert das Genre scharfsinnigen, auch spitzfindigen Denkens, das sich nicht mehr an Normen ausrichten läßt. Jedes neue Epigramm Logaus verlangt einen Blickwechsel und eine andere Sicht auf die Welt. Das schließt Widerspruch und kritische Rücknahmen ein und ergibt im Resultat: Pluralität des Denkens.

This title was first published in 2003. The secular song of the 17th century represents a relatively neglected area of German culture. In this book, Anthony J. Harper first studies the songs of the two great models of the time, Martin Opitz and Paul Fleming, following this with an analysis of the song-books and collections from three regions: the North-East, Central Germany, and the North. The procedure is thus both historical and geographical. The texts of these songs are examined in relation to structural principles, thematic range and stylistic treatment. Harper establishes common features and regional variations of this genre, which involves love-poetry, songs of manners with colourful portrayals of everyday life, and comic songs in a lower stylistic register. Particular attention is paid to the work of Albert and Dach in Konigsberg, Finckelthaus, Schirmer, Krieger and Schoch in Leipzig and Dresden, and Rist, Voigtlander, Zesen, Greflinger and Stieler in the Hamburg region. The main aim of the work is to present emblematics in Hungary in its European context, and to show the reciprocal influence between that phenomenon and mainstream literature. The description of the theoretical and historical development in Hungary is supplemented by a series of case studies examining the effect of emblematics upon various literary genres. The final chapter analyzes the link between literary emblematics and the visual arts by looking at a specific example. As in most European countries, emblematics in Hungary is part of a complex labyrinth of literary modes of thought and expression. A relative poverty of theoretical writing went hand in hand with a considerable range of emblematic practice. The emblem proved to be a transitional form between the period when signs and motifs were regarded as having specific and fixed meanings and the modern period when we have developed a different and shifting concept of language and meaning. At the same time as emblems began to penetrate the more popular levels of national culture and literature, they also became more specialized. Hungarian emblematics used, for the most part, existing pictorial and textual combinations of pictures and texts. They employed the emblem notably in genres and texts of the genus demonstrativum, which referred to matters which were topical at the time.

The epigram is certainly one of the most intriguing, while at the same time most elusive, genres of Neo-Latin literature. From the end of the fifteenth century, almost every humanist writer who regarded himself a true "poeta" had composed a respectable number of epigrams. Given our sense of poetical aesthetics, be it idealistic, postidealistic, modern, or postmodern, the epigrammatic genre is difficult to understand. Because of its close ties with the historical and social context, it does not fit any of these aesthetic approaches. By presenting various epigram writers, collections, and subgenres from the fifteenth to the seventeenth century, this volume offers a first step toward a better understanding of some of the features of humanist epigram literature.
