In den 1980er Jahren wurde das Erhabene im Kontext der Debatten um die Postmoderne wiederentdeckt. Dabei konzentrierte man sich auf die Theorien Burkes und Kants, in denen das Schöne dem Erhabenen gegenübergestellt wird. Die Geschichte des Erhabenen in der Frühen Neuzeit dagegen blieb weitgehend im dunkeln. Diese Geschichte wird hier dargestellt, wobei die Studie von der These ausgeht, daß für diesen Zeitraum gerade nicht die Dichotomie von Schönem und Erhabenem zentral ist, sondern die Opposition zweier Modelle des Sublimen selbst: das Erhabene des Ps.-Longin und die Dreistillehre der klassischen Rhetorik.

Im Kontext der Debatten um die Postmoderne erlebte die Kategorie des "Erhabenen" seit den 1980er Jahren einen beispiellosen Aufstieg. Als Kehrseite des Schönen ist das Erhabene seither aus keiner ästhetiktheoretischen Debatte mehr wegzudenken. Bezeichnend ist allerdings, daß sich die Diskussion meist auf die Theorien Edmund Burkes und Kants aus der zweiten Hälfte des 18. Jahrhunderts beschränkt hat. Was fehlt, ist eine Darstellung der Geschichte des Erhabenen in der Frühen Neuzeit. Diese Forschungslücke möchte die Studie füllen. In sechs Kapiteln rekonstruiert sie die Geschichte des Erhabenheitsbegriffs von der Erstedition des Traktates von Ps.-Longin im 16. Jahrhundert bis zum Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts. Sie geht von der These aus, daß für die Geschichte des Erhabenen vor Burke und Kant nicht die Dichotomie des "Schönen" und "Erhabenen", sondern der Widerstreit zweier gegensätzlicher Konzepte des Sublimen prägend ist: das Erhabene in der Tradition des Ps.-Longin und der erhabene Stil im Rahmen der Dreistillehre der klassischen Rhetorik. Von dieser Opposition eines "doppelten Erhabenen" ausgehend, werden wesentliche Stationen einer spezifisch "modernen" Emanzipation des Erhabenen aus rhetorischen Traditionen dargestellt. Die Studie argumentiert dabei komparatistisch und bezieht insbesondere die Diskussion in Frankreich und England mit ein.

Thus, on the one hand Johnson confronts his protagonists with historical and personal experiences of fragmentation and alienation, loss and powerlessness. An attitude of sublime spiritual strength thereby proves to be the strategy for coping with life. This interacts dialectically, on the other hand, with the unfulfillable yearning for harmony, reconciliation and playful unison with the world.

Focusing on John Milton’s Paradise Lost , this book investigates the metaphorical identification of nature with a court of law – an old and persistent trope, haunted by ancient aporias, at the intersection of jurisprudence, philosophy and literature. In an enormous variety of texts, from the Greek beginnings of Western literature onward, nature has been described as a courtroom in which an all- encompassing trial takes place and a universal verdict is executed. The first, introductory part of this study sketches an overview of the metaphor’s development in European history, from antiquity to the seventeenth century. In its second, more extensive part, the book concentrates on Milton’s epic Paradise Lost in which the problem of the natural law court finds one of its most fascinating and detailed articulations. Using conceptual tools provided by Hannah Arendt, Walter Benjamin, Hans Blumenberg, Gilles Deleuze, William Empson and Alfred North Whitehead, the study demonstrates that the conflicts in Milton’s epic revolve around the tension between a universal legal procedure inherent in nature and the positive legal decrees of the deity. The divine rule is found to consolidate itself by Nature’s supplementary shadow government; their inconsistencies are not flaws, but rather fundamental rhetorical assets, supporting a law that is inherently "double- formed". In Milton’s world, human beings are thus confronted with a twofold law that entraps them in its endlessly proliferating double binds, whether they obey or not. The analysis of this strange juridical structure can open up new perspectives on Milton’s epic, as well as on the way legal discourse tends to entangle norms with facts and thus to embed itself in human life. This original and intriguing book will appeal not only to those engaged in the study of Milton, but also to anyone interested in the relationship between law, history, literature and philosophy.

Die Idee des Erhabenen in Adalbert Stifters Prosa wurde gelegentlich thematisiert, ohne dass ihr bislang eine systematische Untersuchung zuteil geworden wäre. Die Studie schließt diese Lücke mit einem zweifachen Neuansatz: Erstens beschreibt sie Stifters Rezeption der Idee über populärwissenschaftliche Texte des frühen 19. Jahrhunderts, da eine direkte Aneignung über philosophische Ausführungen nicht zu beweisen ist. Zweitens erfasst sie die Idee des Erhabenen u.a. über Naturtopoi, die Verbindung von Erhabenheit und Einfachheit und die Definition als ‚gemischtes Gefühl‘ analytisch als Textphänomen. Entsprechend zeugen Stifters Texte nicht nur von einer Verarbeitung des Erhabenen, sondern bieten mannigfaltige Variationen, die weit über die philosophischen Grundlagen hinausgehen und deshalb in der Analyse vielfältige Interpretationsmöglichkeiten eröffnen: Neben Naturgegenständen scheint die Idee des Erhabenen entgegen der meisten philosophischen Theorien auch an Gegenständen wie der Musik oder der Erinnerung auf. Den Theorien entsprechend ist das Erhabene meist als Gefühl an ein erlebendes Subjekt gebunden, die Studie arbeitet es aber auch als ästhetisches Argumentationsprinzip jenseits einer figürlichen Perspektive heraus.
