Die an die moderne Feindbildtheorie anknüpfende Arbeit befasst sich mit der Darstellung muslimischer Kontrahenten in der Kreuzzugslyrik des 10. bis 12. Jahrhunderts. Da das Phänomen Kreuzzug nicht nur ein Land oder Sprachgebiet, sondern das gesamte christliche Europa erfasst hat, wurde ein Korpus aus 40 Kreuzliedern der vier vorherrschenden Literaturen der damaligen Zeit (mittellateinisch, provenzalisch, mittelhochdeutsch und altfranzösisch) erstellt, anhand dessen das komplexe Gefüge aus Stereotypen und Vorurteilen, aus denen sich ein Feindbild zusammensetzt, in seinen einzelnen Ausformungen herausgelöst und im Kontext eines idealtypischen mittelalterlichen Weltwissens einer Analyse unterzogen werden kann. Zwei Exkurse zu besonders hervorstechenden Invektiven nehmen darüber hinaus einen vertiefenden Bezug auf ihre Verwendung in weiteren Textgattungen. Ein abschließendes Kapitel gewährt einen kleinen Einblick in die arabische Lyrik desselben Zeitraums.

Im Jahr 1071 erschütterte eine folgenschwere Niederlage das Oströmische Reich. In Manzikert wurde die byzantinische Armee von den türkisch muslimischen Seldschuken vernichtend geschlagen. Die Niederlage war für Byzanz verheerend und bedeutete den Verlust des wichtigen Anatoliens. Die Unterstützung für Byzanz und verschiedene andere politischen Ziele, wie das Revidieren des Schismas von 1052, führten zu einem bis dato beispiellosen religiös motivierten Kriegszug. Die Rede Urbans II. am 27.11.1095. in Clermont war eines der wichtigsten Bauteile für den Erfolg des Ersten Kreuzzugs, welcher im Juli 1099 mit der Eroberung Jerusalems sein Ziel erreichte. Ein Hauptziel des Kreuzzugs war die Rückeroberung Jerusalems von den Muslimen. Die Arbeit soll nun analysieren, ob die Muslime als die uneingeschränkten Feinde der Kreuzfahrer wahrgenommen worden und dementsprechend behandelt worden sind oder eben auch nicht. Die Rede Urbans in Clermont als Initialzünder der Bewegung soll in Anbetracht ihres entscheidenden und prägenden Charakters der Unternehmung noch zusätzlich auf ein muslimisches Feindbild untersucht werden.

The divine commands to annihilate the seven nations living in Canaan (to 'devote them to destruction', herem in Biblical Hebrew) are perhaps the most morally troubling texts of the Hebrew and Christian bibles. Making Sense of Old Testament Genocide: Christian Interpretations of Herem Passages addreses the challenges these texts pose. It presents the various ways in which interpreters from the first century to the twenty-first have attempted to make sense of them. The most troubling approach was no doubt to read them as divine sanction and inspiration for violence and war: the analysis of the use of herem texts in the crusades, the inquisition, and various colonial conquests illustrates this violent way of reading the texts, which has such alarming contemporary relevance. Three additional approaches can also be traced to antiquity, viz. pre-critical, non-literal, and divine-command-theory readings. Finally, critics of Christianity from antiquity via the Enlightenment to today have referenced herem texts: their critical voices are included as well. Christian Hofreiter combines a presentation of a wide range of historical sources with careful analysis that scrutinizes the arguments made and locates the texts in their wider contexts. Influential contributions of such well-known figures as Augustine, Origen, Gregory the Great, Thomas Aquinas, and John Calvin are included, as well as those of critics such as Marcion, Celsus and Matthew Tindal, and less widely known texts such as crusading histories, songs and sermons, colonial conquest accounts, and inquisition manuals. The book thus sheds new light on the ways in which these texts have shaped the thoughts and actions of their readers through the centuries, and offers pertinent insights into how readers might be able to make sense of them today.

This new volume explores the surprisingly intense and complex relationships between East and West during the Middle Ages and the early modern world, combining a large number of critical studies representing such diverse fields as literary (German, French, Italian, English, Spanish, and Arabic) and other subdisciplines of history, religion, anthropology, and linguistics. The differences between Islam and Christianity erected strong barriers separating two global cultures, but, as this volume indicates, despite many attempts to 'Other' the opposing side, the premodern world experienced an astonishing degree of contacts, meetings, exchanges, and influences. Scientists, travelers, authors, medical researchers, chroniclers, diplomats, and merchants criss-crossed the East and the West, or studied the sources produced by the other culture for many different reasons. As much as the theoretical concept of 'Orientalism' has been useful in sensitizing us to the fundamental tensions and conflicts separating both worlds at least since the eighteenth century, the premodern world did not quite yet operate in such an ideological framework. Even though the Crusades had violently pitted Christians against Muslims, there were countless contacts and a palpitable curiosity on both sides both before, during, and after those religious warfares.

Holy War, Martyrdom, and Terror examines the ways that Christian theology has shaped centuries of conflict from the Jewish-Roman War of late antiquity through the First Crusade, the French Revolution, and up to the Iraq War. By isolating one factor among the many forces that converge in war—the essential tenets of Christian theology—Philippe Buc locates continuities in major episodes of violence perpetrated over the course of two millennia. Even in secularized or explicitly non-Christian societies, such as the Soviet Union of the Stalinist purges, social and political projects are tied to religious violence, and religious conceptual structures have influenced the ways violence is imagined, inhibited, perceived, and perpetrated. The patterns that emerge from this sweeping history upend commonplace assumptions about historical violence, while contextualizing and explaining some of its peculiarities. Buc addresses the culturally sanctioned logic that might lead a sane person to kill or die on principle, traces the circuitous reasoning that permits contradictory political actions, such as coercing freedom or pardoning war atrocities, and locates religious faith at the backbone of nationalist conflict. Die Wahrnehmung des Gegenüber wird dann zum reinen Feindbild reduziert. Man selbst grenzt sich ganz entschieden von diesem ab. Solche Auseinandersetzungen rufen also voneinander abhängige Selbst- und Feindbilder hervor. Diese Bilder verfestigen sich so, dass sie über längere Zeit hinweg stabil bleiben und sich nur schwer ändern. Beim Feindbild handelt es sich um handlungsleitende Eigenschaften des Gegners, über dessen langfristige Absichten und Fähigkeiten, das Selbstbild hegt jede Seite von sich selbst, wobei das sowieso schon strahlende, ideale Bild oft verherrlicht wird. Diese Wahrnehmungsmuster sind hierbei jedoch nicht der Grund für den Konflikt, sondern eine logische Folge der Grundauseinandersetzung. Die Gegnerwahrnehmung wird im Laufe der Zeit sogar noch dauernd verstärkt und erneuert. Dadurch werden die Feindbilder noch verstärkt und nähren den Konflikt immer wieder aufs Neue. Auch im Rolandslied ist das Selbst- und Feindbild klar definiert: Als Selbstbild beschreibt Konrad die unfehlbaren Christen, die todesmutig für Gott in den Kreuzzug gegen alle Gegner ihres Glauben ziehen, das Feindbild zeigt die frevelhaften, feigen Heiden, von deren Verhalten sich die Gottesritter deutlich abgrenzen. Die offensichtlichsten Unterschiede werden von Konrad also in Bezug der Heiden und Christen auf ihre Götter bzw. Gott aufgezeichnet. Darauf soll nun hier genauer eingegangen werden.
