The Uses of the Bible in Crusader Sources sets out to understand the ideology and spirituality of crusading by exploring the biblical imagery and exegetical interpretations which formed its philosophical basis. Medieval authors frequently drew upon scripture when seeking to justify, praise, or censure the deeds of crusading warriors on many frontiers. Theologians shunned the practical use of force, while the warrior aristocracy valued the capacity for physical destruction. In the absence of theological doctrine on the practicalities of holy warfare, the first crusaders draw their ideas about killing from diverse and sometimes conflicting traditions. This book investigates how minorities contributed to medieval society, comparing these contributions to majority society’s perceptions of the minority. In this volume the contributors define ‘minority’ status as based on a group’s relative position in power relations, that is, a group with less power than the dominant group(s). The chapters cover both what modern historians call ‘religious’ and ‘ethnic’ minorities (including, for example, Muslims in Latin Europe, German-speakers in Central Europe, Dutch in England, Jews and Christians in Egypt), but also address contemporary medieval definitions; medieval writers distinguished between ‘believers’ and ‘infidels’, between groups speaking different languages and between those with different legal statuses. The contributors reflect on patterns of influence in terms of what majority societies borrowed from minorities, the ways in which minorities contributed to society, the mechanisms in majority society that triggered positive or negative perceptions, and the function of such perceptions in the dynamics of power. The book highlights structural and situational similarities as well as historical contingency in the shaping of minority influence and majority perceptions. The chapters in this book were originally published as special issue of the Journal of Medieval History.

Preaching was an integral part of the crusade movement. This book focuses on the efforts of the first four Avignon popes to organize crusade preaching campaigns to the Eastern Mediterranean and on the role of the secular and regular clergy in their implementation. Historians have treated the fall of Acre in 1291 as an arbitrary boundary in crusader studies for far too long. The period 1305–1352 was particularly significant for crusade preaching, yet it has not been studied in detail. This volume thus constitutes an important addition to the flourishing field of late medieval crusade historiography. The core of the book deals with two interlocking themes: the liturgy for the Holy Land and the popular response to crusade preaching between the papacies of Clement V and Clement VI. The book analyses the evolving use of the liturgy for the crusade in combination with preaching and it illustrates the catalytic role of these measures in driving popular pro-crusade sentiments. A key theme in the account is the analysis of the surviving crusade sermons of the Parisian theologians from the era. Critical editions of these previously neglected propagandistic texts are a valuable addition to our corpus of papal correspondence relating to the crusades in the later Middle Ages. This book will be of interest both to specialized historians and to students of late medieval crusading.

It assembles c.200 sermon texts and c.100 manuscripts, to understand the explosive dynamic of mobilization in the Latin West. The Book of Raymond of Aguilers, also called the Historia Francorum qui Ceperunt Iherusalem, is one of a handful of eyewitness accounts of the First Crusade, the name given to an armed expedition called for by Pope Urban II at the Council of Clermont in 1095 that journeyed and fought its way to the Holy Land, culminating in the conquest of Jerusalem in July 1099. Raymond’s account primarily follows the journey of Count Raymond IV of Toulouse, also called the count of St. Gilles, which makes it a useful counterpart to the anonymously written Gesta Francorum, another eyewitness account that focuses on the Italian Normans that followed Bohemond. Raymond became the count of St. Gilles’ chaplain during the crusade, and through that proximity to one of the crusade’s leaders, Raymond’s account offers a ringside seat to the leadership dynamics of the crusade. Furthermore, his deliberate focus on the contingent from Provençe provides insight into their social dynamics and the concerns of some of the common people, which is a rarity among medieval narratives. This new translation is the first to be based on the critical edition of the Latin text produced by John France and is intended primarily for the benefit of undergraduates and to make Raymond more accessible in the classroom. It especially aims to improve access to the text for students who, until this translation, have found it difficult to read the text in full and uninterrupted.
