Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2009 in the subject Film Science, grade: A, Savannah College of Art and Design - The University for Creative Careers (School of Film and Digital Media, Savannah College of Art and Design), course: Film and Digital Media Production, language: English, abstract: Dean Cundey in as American cinematographer, most notably known for both, his early career in low-budget genre movies like Halloween, and his rise to one of Hollywood's most sought after cinematographers for big effects movies in the late 1980s and 1990s, like Back To The Future or Jurassic Park. Cundey is a member of the American Cinematographers Society. He has been nominated for Academy Awards and ASC Awards in Best Cinematography. Dean Raymond Cundey was born on March 12, 1946 in Alhambra, California. His father was a salesman for the credit information provider Dun & Bradstreet while his mother was a housewife. Cundey grew up as a fan of the movies and used his father's 8 mm film camera to shoot home movies. "Being fascinated by the different world movies could create", Cundey developed an interest in production design, and in ninth grade wrote an essay hoping to become a Hollywood production designer. But although Cundey's father had clients in the movie industry, Hollywood seemed very far away for the young Cundey.

Seminar paper from the year 2006 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,7, Ruhr-University of Bochum (Englisches Seminar), course: Skin Deep - Beauty, Bodies and Business, WS 2005/2006, language: English, abstract: In Robert Iscove’s "She’s all that" beauty ideals and beauty standards play a major role and the submission of Laney to these standards and ideals is the reason why Zack falls in love with her. That is why I am going to argue that in Robert Iscove’s movie ideals of white, middle-class, male society are taken as a basis to prove that submission to these standards is the only way for women to be accepted by men.

Essay from the year 2016 in the subject Communications - Interpersonal Communication, grade: 86, LCC International University, course: Interpersonal Communication, language: English, abstract: "The Imitation Game" (2014) is a historical drama movie directed by Morten Tyldum based on the book "Alan Turing: The Enigma" by Andrew Hodges. The film is about life of a famous British mathematician and cryptanalyst Alan Turing, who is famous by the deciphering of the German Enigma coding machine during the World War II. On the one hand, the movie tells a story of a person with a brilliant mind who changed the course of the world history, but on the other hand, this film is a personal drama that depicts complicated relationships between Alan and other people. Alan has lack of communication skills and his perception of the reality differs from others’ ones. Being misunderstood and rejected by people because of the peculiarity during his college years, Turing closes himself from the world, except one friend. At the beginning of the World War II he joins the secret cryptographists’ team, creates a computer-prototype machine and solves the Enigma mystery. The film brightly shows main character’s communication difficulties and his inability to collaborate in a team. After years, being caught by a policeman, executed and suffered from the punishment, the only one person who could understand him, Joan Clarke, visits him and witnesses his mental and health problems – the results of the execution. I found it very interesting to analyze the development of the relationships between Turing and other people in the movie, how he confronts and deals with life and communication difficulties, and also Turing’s personality. The film’s thread of society’s suppressing on Alan and, eventually, death from it, also shows an inability of the society to accept extraordinary individuals. That is why I chose three themes to analyze and provide examples from the film – perception, identity and relationship maintenance. The purpose of my paper is to show that Alan Turing tries to understand the society, but the society does not want to understand and to admit him.

»What can you do when you have to be a man?«, fragt Jim (James Dean) seinen Vater in »Rebel Without a Cause« (1955), dem wohl bekanntesten Jugendfilm der 50er Jahre.

Racial Castration written by David L. Eng and has been published by Duke University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001-03-20 with Social Science categories.

Racial Castration, the first book to bring together the fields of Asian American studies and psychoanalytic theory, explores the role of sexuality in racial formation and the place of race in sexual identity. David L. Eng examines images—literary, visual, and filmic—that configure past as well as contemporary perceptions of Asian American men as emasculated, homosexualized, or queer. Eng juxtaposes theortical discussions of Freud, Lacan, and Fanon with critical readings of works by Frank Chin, Maxine Hong Kingston, Lonny Kaneko, David Henry Hwang, Louie Chu, David Wong Louie, Ang Lee, and R. Zamora Linmark. While situating these literary and cultural productions in relation to both psychoanalytic theory and historical events of particular significance for Asian Americans, Eng presents a sustained analysis of dreamwork and photography, the mirror stage and the primal scene, and fetishism and hysteria. In the process, he offers startlingly new interpretations of Asian American masculinity in its connections to immigration exclusion, the building of the transcontinental railroad, the wartime internment of Japanese Americans, multiculturalism, and the model minority myth. After demonstrating the many ways in which Asian American males are haunted and constrained by enduring domestic norms of sexuality and race, Eng analyzes the relationship between Asian American male subjectivity and the larger transnational Asian diaspora. Challenging more conventional understandings of diaspora as organized by race, he instead reconceptualizes it in terms of sexuality and queerness.

Seminar paper from the year 2002 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,7 (A-), University of Cologne (English Seminar), course: Sex/Gender Representation in Modern American Culture, language: English, abstract: 1. Introduction The figure in the middle of the high room seems to be alone, despite all the people around him. He (apparently a male person) kneels on a kind of a stage wearing a kimono and a wig. It must be a prison, because all the people around wear prison clothing. Like spectators in an arena (or in a theatre) the prisoners occupy the balconies above, and the space in front of the stage. He starts to speak: "I have a vision. Of the Orient. That, deep within her almond eyes, there are still women. Women willing to sacrifice themselves for the love of a man. Even a man whose love is completely without worth." In my paper I want to show, how Eng′s text can help to analyze three particular passages of David Cronenberg′s movie to look behind Gallimard′s psyche. I will take those three sequences which appear in chronological order in the film, and apply parts of Eng′s theory on them. How does Gallimard manage the situations, and why "it is, after all, only through Gallimard′s sustained identifications with and Song′s sustained investments in conventional stereotypes and fantasies of the Oriental geisha that Hwang′s drama can unfold to its pitiable end." Doing this, I am also briefly going to look on certain cinematic techniques (especially the setting of light in the first scene I have chosen) to find out, how David Cronenberg interprets Hwang′s Drama and how he creates Gallimard′s psyche, Gallimard′s feelings for Song, and how Cronenberg deals with the question of gender and race. And finally, I will raise the question, if Gallimard is homosexual. Does Eng′s theory give a proper answer for that or can that question be solved, though Eng does eventually not give any answers.
