Die interdisziplinäre Studie zum Text-Bild-Verhältnis geht der Frage nach, wie der Ausdruck der ‚vremde‘ in den illuminierten Handschriften des Parzival Wolframs von Eschenbach konnotiert ist. Die sprachliche Untersuchung ausgewählter Textzeugen (Cgm 19, cpg 339 und Cod. AA 91) gibt Aufschluss über die Semantik der ‚Fremde‘ zwischen der Mitte des 13. und der zweiten Hälfte des 15. Jh. Die Bildanalyse widmet sich den zeitgenössischen stereotypen Vorstellungen von ‚vremde‘ und zeigt z.B. auf welche Weise Feirefiz als ‚heide‘ dargestellt ist. Weiterhin wird erkennbar, wie bildgestalterische Mittel quasi rhetorisch zur visuellen Umsetzung mit den semantischen Teilbedeutungen der ‚vremde‘ beitragen. Das reicht von inhaltlichen dargestellten Details – etwa wenn Cundrie einen Eberzahn erhält – bis hin zu formalen Gestaltungelementen wie Farbe oder Bildaufteilung. Die Untersuchung trägt zur Forschungdsdiskussion bebilderter Handschriften bei und plädiert für die Untersuchung eines Codex als Gesamtwerk. Textuelle und bildliche Inhalte sind für die Wahrnehmung und Interpretation durch den Betrachter ebenso relevant wie die Schrift, die Seitengestaltung und die gesamte Materialität.

Toleration and Tolerance in Medieval European Literature aims to examine and unearth the critical investigations of toleration and tolerance presented in literary texts of the Middle Ages. In contrast to previous approaches, this volume identifies new methods of interpreting conventional classifications of toleration and tolerance through the emergence of multi-level voices in literary, religious, and philosophical discourses of authorities in medieval literature. Accordingly, this volume identifies two separate definitions of toleration and tolerance, the former as a representative of a majority group accepts a member of the minority group but still holds firmly to the believe that s/he is right and the other entirely wrong, and tolerance meaning that all faiths, convictions, and ideologies are treated equally, and the majority speaker is ready to accept that potentially his/her position is wrong. Applying these distinct differences in the critical investigation of interaction and representation in context, this book offers new insight into the tolerant attitudes portrayed in medieval literature of which regularly appealed, influenced and shaped popular opinions of the period.

Language as a complex and dynamic phenomenon is an important instrument for reflecting individual and social identity.
