Jan van Eyck gilt als Begründer der niederländischen Malerei. Mit seinem Dresdner Marien-Altar und der Bildniszeichnung des Niccolò Albergati stehen nun zwei Schlüsselwerke im Zentrum einer Ausstellung, die erstmals alle Gemälde und Zeichnungen der altniederländischen Kunst aus dem Besitz der Staatlichen Kunstsammlungen Dresden vereint. Das Bildnis des Niccolò Albergati ist die einzige bekannte Zeichnung Jan van Eycks; dessen 1437 entstandener Marien-Altar stellt das einzige erhaltene Triptychon im Werk des Wegbereiters der europäischen Tafelmalerei dar. Zum weiteren Bestand der Gemäldegalerie zählen 14 Tafelbilder, darunter Flügelaltäre, private Andachtsbilder und Porträts. Der außerordentlich große Bestand des Kupferstich-Kabinetts mit über 60 Zeichnungen aus dem 15. und frühen 16. Jahrhundert gibt einen faszinierenden Überblick über die verschiedenen Funktionen der Zeichnung. Zwei einführende Studien stellen die neuesten Erkenntnisse zu den beiden Dresdner Werken Jan van Eycks vor. Dem" Geheimnis"seiner Malweise ist eine besondere Untersuchung gewidmet. Weitere Studien beschäftigen sich mit einer Folge von fünf Planetendarstellungen, dem weltweit größten Konvolut an Zeichnungen des Meisters von Absalom, den Zeichenmaterialen sowie den verwendeten Papieren. Stephen Perkinson's "The likeness of the king" challenges the canonical account of the invention of modern portrait practices, offering a case against the tendency of recent scholarship to identify likenesses of historical personages as "the first modern portraits". Focusing on the Valois court of France, he argues that local practice prompted shifts in the late medieval understanding of how images could represent individuals and prompted artists and patrons to deploy likeness in a variety of ways.
