Die protestantische Missionsbewegung war von einer ganzen Reihe von Initiativen, Veranstaltungen, Vereinen und Publikationen getragen. Missionsvereine, Nähkränzchen, Missionsstunden, Missionsblätter und nicht zuletzt zahllose Missionsfeste, auf denen häufig ein Missionar über seine Erfahrungen aus dem Missionsgebiet berichtete, trugen dazu bei, die Anliegen der Äußeren Mission bis in die letzten Winkel der ländlichen Gesellschaft hinein bekannt zu machen. Dennoch liegen über diese Seite der Äußeren Mission bisher kaum Forschungsarbeiten vor. Das vorliegende Buch greift dieses Desiderat auf und versucht beispielhaft an der Region um Göttingen in einer Verbindung diskursanalytischer und mikrohistorischer Ansätze zu rekonstruieren, wie sich die Unterstützung der Äußeren Mission genau gestaltete und welche Akteurinnen und Akteure sich für Mission interessierten und wie engagierten. Dabei steht die Frage im Vordergrund, welche Bedeutung diesen Initiativen in einer Verflechtungsgeschichte um 1900 als Transmissionsriemen für die Produktion von Bildern aus dem Außereuropäischen zukam. In der Unterstützung der Äußeren Mission, so soll gezeigt werden, verbanden sich lokale Identitätsdiskurse und religiöse Deutungsangebote, die »das Globale« im Lokalen strukturierten.

This open access book offers an entangled history of hygiene by showing how knowledge of purity, health and cleanliness was shaped by evangelical medical missionaries and their encounters with people in West Africa. By tracing the interactions and negotiations of six Basel Mission doctors, who practised on the Gold Coast and in Cameroon from 1885 to 1914, the author demonstrates how notions of religious purity, scientific health and colonial cleanliness came together in the making of hygiene during the age of High Imperialism. The heyday of evangelical medical missions abroad coincided with the emergence of tropical medicine as a scientific discipline during what became known as the Scramble for Africa. This book reveals that these projects were intertwined and that hygiene played an important role in all three of them. While most historians have examined modern hygiene as a European, bourgeois and scientific phenomenon, the author highlights both the colonial and the religious fabric of hygiene, which continues to shape our understanding of purity, health and cleanliness to this day.

Competing Missions, Julia Hauser offers a critical analysis of the German Protestant Kaiserswerth deaconesses’ orphanage and boarding school for girls in late Ottoman Beirut as situated within the larger field of educational development in the city. Drawing, among other sources, on the deaconesses’ largely unpublished letters home, her study illuminates that the only way missionary organizations like the deaconesses' could succeed was by entering into negotiations with their local environment, adapting their agenda in the process. Mission, therefore, was shaped not merely at home, but by conflictual negotiations on the periphery ‒ a perspective quite different from the top-down isolationist perspective of earlier research on missions.

The case studies in this volume illustrate the global dimension of flight and migration movements with a special focus on South-South migration. Thirteen chapters shed light on transcontinental or regional migration processes, as well as on long-term processes of arrival and questions of belonging. Flight and migration are social phenomena. They are embedded in individual, familial and collective histories on the level of nation states, regions, cities or we-groups. They are also closely tied up with changing border regimes and migration policies. The explanatory power of case studies stems from analyzing these complex interrelations. Case studies allow us to look at both “common” and “rare” migration phenomena, and to make systematic comparisons. On the basis of in-depth fieldwork, the authors in this volume challenge dichotomous distinctions between flight and migration, look at changing perspectives during processes of migration, consider those who stay, and counter political and media discourses which assume that Europe, or the Global North in general, is the pivot of international migration.
