The migration of highly skilled individuals brings together two important and well-developed institutional systems: on the one hand, the organization of professions and, on the other hand, the state and its migration and integration regime. Therefore, professional migrants move between two levels of regulation. The first one applies to their specific professional group and regulates the acquisition of knowledge as well as the participation in the labor market. The second one controls the access to and settlement in a given country. Taking the examples of medicine and the information technologies (IT) in Germany and Chile, the present research asks how different institutional settings shape the cultural capital negotiation strategies of highly skilled Latin American migrants. Using Bourdieu’s relational theory and especially his concepts of field and capital, this book seeks to understand professions as fields and to follow the trajectories of highly skilled Latin American migrants within two transnational professional fields. Using a reconstructive praxeological approach, this book presents three typologies, showing how the interaction between (transnational) professional fields and national regulations creates different possibilities for highly skilled migrants to negotiate their capital and the strategies they develop to reach a good position in their host country’s labor market.

As well as promoting debates about liberal democracy, the dramatic events of 1989 also bought forth a powerful revival in the interest of the notion of civil society. This revival was reflected mainly in two broad tracts of literature. The first was primarily focused on the events surrounding the Solidarity movement in Poland and the tumultuous events of 1980-81. The second was concerned with the ‘Velvet Revolutions’ more broadly. Following the events of 1989, there appeared a number of works sharing the common central argument that civil society played a key role in the overthrow of these Communist regimes in 1989. Challenging the centrally accepted wisdom that dissent in totalitarian regimes was representative of civil society, Civil Society and Communism posits the argument that the totalitarian public sphere, a new theoretical typology, presents a more robust and rigorous way by which to understand dissent and opposition in totalitarian Czechoslovakia, Poland and the GDR.

Die gegenwärtigen medientechnischen Entwicklungen haben zu einem immensen Aufschwung der Bilder beigetragen. Noch nie wurde so viel mit Bildern kommuniziert wie heute. Wie verständigen wir uns mit Bildern? Wie erzeugen wir in unserem Alltag Sinn mit ihnen? Die Logik des Bildes hat, im Vergleich zu jener der Sprache, in der Forschung bisher wenig methodologische Beachtung gefunden. Vor allem in der Auseinandersetzung mit Medien und Kommunikation fehlt eine prinzipielle Beschäftigung mit Bildverständigung bislang weitgehend. Im vorliegenden Buch wird theoretisch und empirisch die Funktion des Bildes in der wechselseitigen Konstitution von Medien und Alltag geklärt und in einem empirisch fundierten, praxeologischen Kommunikationsmodell verdichtet. Das Modell begründet und ermöglicht empirische Forschung, die gegenwärtige Kommunikation insofern zu erfassen weiß, als u. a. unterschiedliche Medialitäten (Sprache, Bild, Musik ...) in ihrem Eigensinn ebenso wie Social-Media-Kommunikation systematisch beachtet werden.
