English summary: The French philosopher Paul Ricoeur (1913-2005) always refused to be considered a 'theologian'. Yet throughout his life he concerned himself with biblical themes. In all his reflective work philosophical and biblical hermeneutics relate to each in an extraordinary, but never directly analyzed state of unresolved conflict. In this study, Kathrin Messner looks to address this particular challenge. With this in mind, the two closing lectures of the 1986 Edinburgh Gifford Lectures, neither of which were previously available in German, and Ricoeur's lecture Amour et justice. Liebe und Gerechtigkeit given in Tubingen in 1989, both acquire fundamental importance. When compared with his main philosophical-hermeneutic work Oneself as Another (1990) and set against the background of his Intellectual Autobiography (1995), the resulting discoveries are astonishing. German description: Der franzosische Philosoph Paul Ricoeur (1913-2005) hat es stets abgelehnt, als Theologe bezeichnet zu werden. Nichtsdestotrotz hat er sich zeitlebens mit biblischen Themen auseinandergesetzt. Verglichen mit seinem zentralen philosophisch-hermeneutischen Werk Das Selbst als ein Anderer (1990) und in den Kontext seiner Intellektuellen Autobiographie (1995) gestellt, ergeben sich dabei erstaunliche Entdeckungen.

A real book on ethics, as Wittgenstein had it, if one could conceive it in the first place, would be the book to destroy all other books. Yet there is an increasing number of real-world discourses in which ethical values are mobilized as justifications for socio-political action while, in turn, moral problems are becoming a topic of political negotiation. Ecclesiology is the study of the church and has two focal points; the one is the historical and doctrinal perspective on the church, and the other is the church as situated in a local context in the sense of the local practices of actual congregations. The ecclesiology or, more correctly, the ecclesiologies of this volume mainly focuses on the second aspect, i.e., understanding the local congregation or parish as a community of believers. A congregation may firstly be described by posing a theological question: What is the local missional church or congregation all about? This question may be answered from different perspectives, but it remains essential to answer it from a theological perspective. The first five chapters in this book focus mainly on a theological understanding of the congregation. This is done from different disciplines within the study field of theology. Congregations are, secondly, social realities and should be described and analysed through an analytical or empirical lens, or, to answer the question attached to the first empirical-descriptive task of practical theology, “What is going on?”. The remaining chapters use a quantitative and qualitative lens and give an empirical analysis of the congregation. The intention is to critically reflect on the church and congregations’ ecclesiology from a theological and analytical perspective with an emphasis on the South African context. It wants to map markers for the development of contemporary ecclesiologies, and the different chapters are meant as mirrors to look in and reflect on the theological and contextual relevance of denominations and congregations in South Africa.

The advent of Modernity was accompanied by a radical criticism of traditional metaphysics. In particular since the 20th century, rationality is predominantly conceived of as positivistic and scientistic, reducing reality to what is positively knowable. The price to pay is the cutting out of any kind of phenomenon of negativity. The present volume explicitly explores the philosophical and epistemological potential of negativity. The contributions brought together in this book tackle the question of negativity from historical as well as from systematical perspectives. From different angles, they defend the claim that philosophical approaches recurring to negativity can build a non-reductive conceptualization of rationality, and thus offer a valuable contribution to the orientation of humankind in the 20th and 21st century.
