Der öffentlichen Diskussion um den Islam liegt ein Konzept 'Islam' zugrunde, das im Diskurs gespiegelt wird und zugleich dort auch entsteht. Die vorliegende Studie untersucht diesen Entstehungsprozess und zeigt, dass Bedeutung nicht nur an einzelne Ausdrücke geknüpft, sondern auch ein flächiges Phänomen ist. Dabei bewegt sich der analysierende Blick graduell gestuft auf die Texte (Zeitungen, Stellungnahmen, Abhandlungen usw.) zu: Der zu untersuchende Textausschnitt wird immer kleiner gewählt, um ihn bei jedem Schritt genauer betrachten zu können. Jede der in der Studie angewandten Methoden besitzt diskursanalytische Vorzüge, ist aber als einzelne in ihren Möglichkeiten eingeschränkt. Mittels Kombination der – qualitativen und quantitativen – Methoden aus lexikalischer Semantik, Text- und Diskurslinguistik ist es schließlich möglich, das Konzept umfassend zu beschreiben. Neben diesen linguistisch-methodischen Erkenntnissen liefert das Buch auch bezogen auf den Gegenstand Islam interessante Ergebnisse: Es wird gezeigt, wie Diskursteilnehmer z.B. mittels Kollokationen wie radikaler, politischer Islam bzw. moderater, dialogoffener Islam den Islam nicht nur beschreiben, sondern ihm durch die sprachliche Darstellung inhaltliche Konturen verleihen und ihn als so konturierte Größe zum Objekt der öffentlichen Auseinandersetzung machen – der Islam ist das, als was er im Diskurs erscheint.

This volume of the series "Key Concepts in Interreligious Discourses" investigates the roots of the concept of "body" in Judaism, Christianity and Islam. The Body and being a created being stands in the focus of all the thre major monotheistic faiths. Following al-Fārābī’s approach, Ibn Sīnā (d. 428/1037) undertakes a new foundation of the First Philosophy based on his own critical systematisation of the Aristotelian theory of science, yielding the result that metaphysics is only possible as a transcendental science, i.e. that not only the subject-matter of metaphysics and its properties but also the arguments by which the first principles of knowledge are defended must be transcendental. This book provides the first systematic reconstruction of Ibn Sīnā’s concept of metaphysics, and, given the considerable influence his achievement had on the Islamic tradition as well as on scholastic philosophers, it is relevant to the study of the history of metaphysics, Islamic theology (kalām), and Arabic philosophy.

Schutz und Andacht im Islam befasst sich mit handschriftlichen Dokumenten in Rollenform, die zwischen dem 14. und 19. Jh. entstanden sind. Die vorgestellten Belegstücke stammen aus unterschiedlichen geographischen Kontexten: a. Städtedreieck Tabriz-Konya-Bagdad; b. persischer Kulturraum; c. Osmanisches Reich. Diese Rollen waren bei Angehörigen von Männerbünden (Sufi-Orden, Futuwwa- und Aḫī-Gruppierungen, Gilden) beliebt. Die Studie untersucht das auf diesen Dokumenten verwendete textliche und ge¬stalterische Vokabular. Neben Passagen aus dem Koran (auch vollständige Abschriften) lassen sich oft Gebete und weitere Texte frommen Inhalts feststellen. Gelegentlich finden sich Hinweise, dass die Dokumente aus heterodoxen Umfeldern stammen. Die Studie unterstreicht ausserdem den hohen kunsthistorischen Wert der vorgestellten Belegstücke, die oft für Angehörige von gesellschaftlichen Eliten angefertigt worden sind. Devotion and Protection in Islam deals with hand-written documents in the scroll format dating from the 14th–19th centuries. These documents can be attributed to various geographic contexts: a. the triangle between the cities of Tabriz, Konya and Baghdad; b. the Persianate world; c. the Ottoman Empire. These scrolls were appreciated by members of different associations (Männerbünde; e.g. Sufi orders, Futuwwa and Aḫī groups). This study analyses the textual and ornamental vocabulary applied on the scrolls. The copied texts mostly comprise passages from the Quran and prayers. Certain features suggest that such scrolls were often produced in heterodox environments. Additionally, this study underscores the high art-historical value of these documents, particularly appreciated by members of the ruling elite.

Salafism and jihadism are an important focus of inner-German security discussions. The Salafi proselytizing is more successful than ever, and the jihad in Afghanistan or Syria pulls Islamists from Germany.This collection offers an examination of currently virulent phenomena of Salafism and jihadism from different perspectives. It is sometimes claimed that either Islam and violence or religion and terror go hand in hand; the authors of this volume aim to show that this is not so. Using the methods of social science to determine whether and under what conditions such a dangerous proximity comes about, this book offers insight into which actors are being looked for by extremists to exploit and to use as self-fulfilling prophecies.To this end, the authors develop innovative analytical concepts: Among other things, a process of co-radicalization and an attitude-based approach to the study of Salafist networks are described.The book makes an important contribution to the current debate by not presenting the potentially dangerous proximity of Islam and violence as a social fact, but describes it as a factor that can be influenced and understood.Salafismus und Dschihadismus stehen im Mittelpunkt innerdeutscher Sicherheitsdiskussionen.
