Der Bereich der Sudsee ist wegen der Vielzahl seiner haufig weit auseinander gelegenen und daher teilweise sehr isolierten Inseln und Inselgruppen religionswissenschaftlich schwer als eine Einheit darzustellen. Hans Nevermann unterteilt seinen Beitrag deshalb in die Gruppen Polynesien, Fidschi, Mikronesien, Melanesien und Neuguinea. Die Darstellung macht auf der einen Seite die Eigenart der religiosen Entwicklung in den verschiedenen Gebieten deutlich, verschafft aber gerade so einen Uberblick uber die Vielfalt der religiosen Phanomene dieser Inselwelt. Auch die Religionen Australiens geben den Eindruck grosser Mannigfaltigkeit. Jedoch wird das Kultleben in Australien von einer einheitlichen Grundidee beherrscht. Es ist dies der Glaube eines einfachen Wildbeuter- und Nomadenvolkes an die - vor allem durch Kultgerate erwirkte - fortdauernde Nahe ubernaturlicher Wesen und die Reaktivierung der von ihnen ausgehenden unsichtbaren Krafte. Mit der Beschreibung der verschiedenartigen kultischen Gerate, der von Gebiet zu Gebiet wechselnden heiligen Wesen, der heiligen Musik und der Initiationsriten gibt Ernest A. Worms ein Bild von der Vielfalt der Auspragungen dieses einheitlichen Glaubens. In einem besonderen Kapitel gibt Worms eine Vorstellung der Religionen Tasmaniens und vergleicht sie mit denen des Festlandes. Nach dem Tode von Worms erfolgte eine letzte Uberarbeitung durch Helmut Petri.
