One hundred and sixty-one entries by scholars from some 35 countries cover concepts and definitions in the field as well as a disciplinary perspective on its development. Articles are arranged in sections (introduced by the editor) on concepts, theories, and methods; policies, costs, and finance; human development and adult learning; participation and provision; organization; and evaluation and measurement. The articles, most of which are five to eight pages long, include references, cross references, and (often) suggested readings. Annotation copyright by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Data from the Malmo (Sweden) longitudinal study were examined for the effects of continuing adult educational attainment and formal schooling on subsequent socioeconomic achievement over the life span of the individual worker. The results suggest that acquired level of formal schooling directly influences occupational success and earnings in the early, middle, and late phases of the career cycle investigated. The effect of continuing education attainment on occupational success increases considerably from age 35 to 52. The results do not indicate that continuing education exerts a significant effect on earnings. Continuing education may function as a second road to occupational mobility partially independent of acquired level of formal schooling. The results generated, however, do not lend support to the assumption that recurrent adult education may significantly affect the relative earnings differentials between the various status groups in society. (Part 1 of this document establishes the theoretical analysis and conceptual frameworks of continuing education. Part 2 reviews Swedish developments from 1960-1985. Part 3 describes the aims, methodology, and findings of the 45-year Malmo study. Appendices contain 24 tables, and a list of over 300 references is included. (CML)

Originally published in 1983. One of the basic capacities of man as a political being is his faculty of judgement. Yet for all the books on concepts like freedom, equality and authority, surprisingly little attention has been given to this topic in the tradition of Western political thought. What is the nature of political judgement? What endows us, as human beings, with the ability to make reasonable judgements about human affairs and to judge the common world we share with others? By what means to we secure validity for our judgements? What are the underlying conditions of this human capacity, and what implications does it have the understanding of politics? These questions, central as they are to any reflection on politics have rarely been addressed in a systematic way. This book examines Kant’s concept of taste and Aristotle’s concept of prudence, as well as recent works of political philosophy by Arendt, Gadamer and Habermas, all crucially influenced by Kant and Aristotle.

Political Interventions written by Pierre Bourdieu and has been published by Verso Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-02-17 with Social Science categories.

Pierre Bourdieu, one of the most influential critical social theorists of the second half of the twentieth century, once described sociology as “a combat sport.” This comprehensive collection of his writings on politics and social science, from early 1960s articles on the Algerian War of Independence to the last text he published before his death, proves that this vision was enduring throughout his life—as well as a serious scholar Bourdieu was always an outspoken public intellectual. Political Interventions includes many texts hitherto unavailable in English and, placing them in their historical context, reconstructs Bourdieu’s vision of academic study and political activism as two sides of the same process: the decoding and critique of social reality in order to transform it.
