Hegel is one of the most important modern philosophers, whose thought influenced the development of existentialism, Marxism, pragmatism, hermeneutics, and deconstruction. Yet Hegel's central text, the monumental Science of Logic, still remains for most philosophers (both figuratively and literally) a firmly closed book. The purpose of The Opening of Hegel's Logic is to dispel the myths that surround the Logic and to show that Hegel's unjustly neglected text is a work of extraordinary subtlety and insight. Part One of The Opening of Hegel's Logic argues that the Logic provides a rigorous derivation of the fundamental categories of thought and contrasts Hegel's approach to the categories with that of Kant. It goes on to examine the historical and linguistic presuppositions of Hegel's self-critical, "presuppositionless" logic and, in the process, considers several signifi-cant criticisms of such logic advanced by Schelling, Feuerbach, Gadamer, and Kierkegaard. Separate chapters are devoted to the relation between logic and ontology in Hegel's Logic and to the relation between the Logic itself and the Phenomenology. Part Two contains the text - in German and English - of the first two chapters of Hegel's Logic, which cover such categories as being, becoming, something, limit, finitude, and infinity. Part Three then provides a clear and accessible commentary on these two chapters that both examines Hegel's arguments in detail and relates his insights to those of other philosophers, such as Descartes, Spinoza, Kant, Nietzsche, and Levinas. The Opening of Hegel's Logic aims to help students and scholars read Hegel's often formidably difficult text for themselves and discover the wealth of philosophical riches that it contains. It also argues that Hegel's project of a presuppositionless science of logic is one that deserves serious consideration today.

Karl Leonhard Reinhold (1757-1823) is a complex figure of the late German Enlightenment. Sometime Catholic priest and active Mason even when still a cleric in Vienna; early disciple of Kant and the first to try to reform the Critique of Reason; influential teacher and prolific author; astute commentator on the immediate post-Kantian scene; and at all times convinced propagandist of the Enlightenment––in all these roles Reinhold reflected his age but also tested the limits of the values that had inspired it. This collection of essays, originally presented at an international workshop held in Montreal in 2007, conveys this multifaceted figure of Reinhold in all its details. In the four themes that run across the contributions––the historicity of reason; the primacy of moral praxis; the personalism of religious belief; and the transformation of classical metaphysics into phenomenology of mind––Reinhold is presented as a catalyst of nineteenth century thought but also as one who remained bound to intellectual prejudices that were typical of the Enlightenment and, for this reason, as still the representative of a past age. The volume contains the text of two hitherto unpublished Masonic speeches by Reinhold, and a description of recently recovered transcripts of student lecture notes dating to Reinhold’s early Jena period.

Das "nichts", das dem Schriftsteller dabei vorschwebte, war in Wirklichkeit freilich kein "Nichts", sondern "etwas" - etwas Bedeutungsloses, etwas, das wegen seiner Alltäglichkeit bis dahin üblicherweise außerhalb des literarischen Interesses lag. In diesem Sinne wird das Wort "nichts" im Alltag ständig verwendet: Es bezeichnet nicht die vollständige Abwesenheit von Seiendem überhaupt, sondern lediglich von irgendwie "bedeutsamem" Seienden. Was dabei als "bedeutsam" gilt, liegt im Ermessen des Sprechers: Entscheidend für seine Verwendung des Wortes "nichts" ist allein sein Bezug zu dem Seienden, das ihn umgibt. Was im Alltag keine Probleme bereitet, stellte für die Philosophen lange Zeit ein Skandalon dar. Der Grund dafür liegt auf der Hand: Da sie im allgemeinen lieber vom Sein selbst als von ihrem Bezug dazu reden, musste ihnen das Wort "nichts" als Verneinung jeglichen Seins von jeher suspekt sein. Bestenfalls diente es ihnen (wie z.B. Augustinus) als Grenzbegriff, der den Bereich des überhaupt denkbaren markierte. Im 20. Jahrhundert war es dann zunächst Martin Heidegger, der dem Nichts zu philosophischer Dignität verhalf. Hatte er schon in seinem Jahrhundertwerk Sein und Zeit (1926) dem Tod ein ganzes Kapitel gewidmet, erklärte er in seiner Freiburger Antrittsvorlesung (1929) die Frage "Warum ist überhaupt Seiendes und nicht vielmehr nichts?" zur "Grundfrage der Metaphysik" überhaupt.
