Die deutsche Islamwissenschaft hat sich mit ihrer Wissenschaftsgeschichte bislang nicht systematisch beschaftigt. Auch die durch Edward Said ausgeloste Orientalismus-Kritik hat bislang nicht dazu gefuhrt, dass die weltanschaulichen Voraussetzungen und konstituierenden Bedingungen des Faches in Deutschland systematisch untersucht wurden. Die vorliegende Studie versucht eine solche Kritik und setzt an Person und Werk von Carl Heinrich Becker (1876-1933) an. Beckers Wirken ist vielfaltig: Er ist ausgebildeter Semitist, wirkte als preussischer Kultusminister, schrieb zu kulturphilosophischen Fragen, war aktiv in der Kolonialpolitik - wird aber in der Islamwissenschaft vor allem als "Kulturhistoriker" erinnert. Auf Beckers Betreiben wurden islamwissenschaftliche Lehrstuhle an Hochschulen in Hamburg, Berlin und Bonn gegrundet. Beckers diverse Schriften werden nun zum ersten Mal in ihrer Gesamtheit gelesen. Daraus ergibt sich ein neuer Befund: Becker hat die "Wissenschaft vom Islam" nicht nur institutionenpolitisch als autonome Disziplin begrundet, sondern auch fachlich fundiert: Durch sein Konzept vom Islam als "Zivilisation" tritt die Suche nach der transzendenten Wahrheit endgultig zuruck zugunsten der historischen Wahrheit. Im Zusammenhang mit den zeitgenossischen kolonialpolitischen Erfordernissen ergibt sich dadurch nicht nur die Offnung fur die Beschaftigung mit Gegenwartsfragen, sondern auch eine kulturtheoretische Umdeutung des Islam. Was Becker dem Islam an Dynamik zugesteht, wird freilich durch eine Essentialisierung des Orients an anderer Stelle wieder genommen. Beckers Konzept der europaischen Moderne ist unmittelbar von der Abgrenzung gegen den Orient abhangig. Die Studie entwickelt ihre Argumentation zunachst aus der immanenten Analyse von Beckers Schriften, stellt sie dann aber in den Kontext der Debatte um das Kulturproblem in der deutschen Geisteswissenschaft um die Wende des 20. Jahrhunderts. Dann verfolgt sie die Rezeption von Beckers Ideen in den nachfolgenden Schulergenerationen. Sie schliesst ab mit einer Darstellung und kritischen Bewertung des Echos, das Becker in der deutsch-, englisch-, franzosisch- und arabischsprachigen Literatur gefunden hat.

Attitudes toward homosexuality in the pre-modern Arab-Islamic world are commonly depicted as schizophrenic—visible and tolerated on one hand, prohibited by Islam on the other. Khaled El-Rouayheb argues that this apparent paradox is based on the anachronistic assumption that homosexuality is a timeless, self-evident fact to which a particular culture reacts with some degree of tolerance or intolerance. Drawing on poetry, biographical literature, medicine, dream interpretation, and Islamic texts, he shows that the culture of the period lacked the concept of homosexuality.

The range of perspectives and original materials dealt with here highlights the renewed urgency of the struggle for cultural autonomy and voice within the context of globalization. Each author explores how the various processes at both the local and global levels intersect to create new discourses and debates around the "indigenization of knowledge." If a new wind of cultural decolonization is blowing through the Arab Middle East and is having profound impact on the lives of men and women, then we should expect a new scholarship to emerge in order to grasp it. This book is a contribution in that direction. A key dimension concerns the issue of borders and boundaries. These are both real and imaginary (i.e., symbolic and metaphoric), hegemonic and counter-hegemonic. Among these borders are spatial ones that determine individuals' and communities' everyday location and place in the world--these include boundaries of class, gender, territory, and language. Each of these separations in turn has embedded in it, and rests on constructions of "imaginary" borders and boundaries. The real and imaginary do not exist as two disparate entities but are inextricably linked to each other in a dialectical move that simultaneously enables and disables movement and action. Current re-visioning of globalization challenges past suppositions. Globalization is a new form of an ongoing process that took inception during the heyday of colonialism. It might serve as a descriptive term to articulate the current historical period, but it remains theoretically problematic and imprecise. Situating Globalization picks up on the problematics of power and its dispersal and concentration. The bearers of these cultural flows seek legitimacy from their potential constituency by positing their language--cultural and religious--as local and therefore inherently in opposition to the hegemonic cultural knowledge that has seeped in from "outside" and led to disempowerment of local "peoples" and "knowledges." Bearers make no mention to this Islamist knowledge, of the "foreignness" of this idiom to many within the societies in question. Any attempt to contest their positioning and bearers of the indigenous results in charges of either betrayal or brainwashing. Cynthia Nelson is professor of anthropology and dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at Sarah Lawrence College. She is author of Doria Shafik, Egyptian Feminist: A Woman Apart. Shahnaz Rouse is a member of its sociology faculty. Her research interests and publications cover agrarian transformation; social movements; the state, religion and gender identity.

Rare is the person who has never known the feelings of apathy, sorrow, and uselessness that characterize the affliction known as melancholy. In this book, one of Europe's leading intellectuals shows that melancholy is not only a psychological condition that affects individuals but also a social and cultural phenomenon that can be of considerable help in understanding the modern middle class. His larger topic is, in fact, modernity in general. Lepenies focuses not on what melancholy is but on what it means when people claim to be melancholy.
