Der Band setzt sich das Ziel, den Begriff der ‚Störung‛ theoretisch konziser zu fassen. Aus interdisziplinärer Perspektive wird ‚Störung‛ erstmals ausführlich als Kategorie geistes- und sozialwissenschaftlicher Forschung diskutiert. Dabei geht der Band von einer Definition aus, die Störung als notwendiges produktives Prinzip zwischenmenschlicher, gesellschaftlicher und ästhetischer Kommunikation begreift. Auf der Grundlage von verschiedenen Ansätzen u.a. aus Medien- und Kommunikationswissenschaft, Systemtheorie und Diskursanalyse geraten derartige Phänomene auf zwei Ebenen in den Blick: In Form von aufstörenden Themen und Kontroversen geben Störungen Anlass für Vorgänge gesellschaftlicher Selbstverständigung und halten eine fortwährende Aushandlung sozialer Toleranzgrenzen in Gang. Da es zu den genuinen Wirkungsbereichen des künstlerischen Felds gehört, solche Aufstörungen zu lancieren, rücken ferner ästhetische Darstellungsverfahren und Inszenierungspraktiken ins Zentrum der Aufmerksamkeit. Die im vorliegenden Band zusammengefassten Beiträge aus Literatur-, Film- und Kunstwissenschaft, Sozial-, Geschichts- und Religionswissenschaften sowie Linguistik und Gender Studies unternehmen den Versuch, weitere Schritte auf dem Weg zu einer allgemeinen ‚Theorie der Störung‛ zu gehen.

The volume examines from a comparative perspective the phenomenon of aesthetic disruption within the various arts in contemporary culture. It assumes that the political potential of contemporary art is not solely derived from presenting its audiences with openly political content, but rather from creating a space of perception and interaction using formal means: a space that makes hegemonic structures of action and communication observable, thus problematizing their self-evidence. The contributions conceptualize historical and contemporary politics of form in the media, which aim to be more than mere shock strategies, which are concerned not just with the ‘narcissistic’ exhibition of art as art, but also with the creation of a new common horizon of experience. They combine the analysis of paradigmatic works, procedures and actions with reference to theoretical debates in the fields of literature, media and art of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. The essay-collection shows how textual, visual, auditive or performative strategies disclose their own ways of functioning, intervene in automated processes of reception and thus work on stimulating a sense of political possibilities. Perturbatory narration is a heuristic concept, applicable both quantitatively and qualitatively to a specific type of complex narratives for which narratology has not yet found an appropriate classification. This new term refers to complex narrative strategies that produce intentionally disturbing effects such as surprise, confusion, doubt or disappointment ‒ effects that interrupt or suspend immersion in the aesthetic reception process. The initial task, however, is to indicate what narrative conventions are, in fact, questioned, transgressed, or given new life by perturbatory narration. The key to our modeling lies in its combination of individual procedures of narrative strategies hitherto regarded as unrelated. Their interplay has not yet attracted scholarly attention. The essays in this volume present a wide range of contemporary films from Canada, the USA, Mexico, Argentina, Spain, France and Germany. The perturbatory narration concept enables to typify and systematize moments of disruption in fictional texts, combining narrative processes of deception, paradox and/or empuzzlement and to analyse these perturbing narrative strategies in very different filmic texts.

Als Fest oder als Katastrophe ist das Medienereignis bereits häufig untersucht worden – seltener allerdings der Augenblick, in dem ein Fest in die Katastrophe umschlägt. Was geschieht in diesem liminalen Moment, in dem das etablierte Festskript brüchig wird, vor und mit den laufenden Kameras, und wie werden diese Momentaufnahmen in situ und post festum verhandelt? Der Störungsmoment offenbart zum einen besonders deutlich die medialen Strategien, Prozesse und Muster, in denen im Medienereignis grundsätzlich Bedeutung generiert, geteilt oder unterminiert wird. Zum anderen zeigt er den Interferenzen zwischen "klassischem Fernsehen" und "digitalen Modi" die (Aus-)Gestalt(ung) von Medienkonvergenzen auf. Aufbauend auf ereignis-, medien- und fernsehtheoretischen Grundlagen, in der Auseinandersetzung mit Fest- und Katastrophentheorien sowie unter Einbezug digitaler bzw. sozialer Medien operationalisiert dieser Band den Umschlagspunkt mithilfe des Begriffs der Störung und identifiziert vier Typen des Medienereignisses zwischen Fest und Katastrophe: den Zusammenfall, den Ausfall, den Einzelfall und den Zwischenfall. Innerhalb dieser Typologie können Analysen u.a. des Anschlags auf die Olympischen Spiele 1972 oder des Loveparade-Unglücks 2010 aufzeigen, dass sich das televisuelle Paradigma der Liveness nicht nur im genuinen Fernsehereignis, sondern auch in digitalen Modi als zentrale formalästhetische und konzeptionelle Konstante des Medienereignisses erweist. Im Umschlag des Festes in die Katastrophe reflektiert sich damit nicht nur das Fernsehen beständig selbst, sondern offenbart sich auch das "hybride" Medienereignis als transmediale Allianz.
