Ein Leben ohne rituelle Praxen ist in unserer gegenwärtigen Gesellschaft nur schwer vorstellbar, auch wenn viele gar nicht wissen, dass sie von Tag zu Tag selbst Rituale ausführen. Wer kennt sie nicht, die festen Abläufe, die uns durch den Alltag begleiten, unser Miteinander regeln und uns Sicherheit und Geborgenheit vermitteln. Sei es die morgendliche Routine nach dem Aufstehen mit einer Tasse Kaffee und einem Croissant zum Frühstück, die jährliche Geburtstagsfeier, bei der das Geburtstagskind die Kerzen auf der Torte auspustet und sich etwas wünscht oder das Singen und Jubeln der begeisterten Fans im Fußballstation, wenn die Lieblingsmannschaft auf dem Feld um den Sieg kämpft. Rituale strukturieren die Gesellschaft und sorgen für ihren Erhalt. Sie spielen eine große Rolle im menschlichen Zusammenleben und haben für die Entstehung, Regulation und Veränderung des Sozialen eine weitaus größere Bedeutung, als ihnen meist zugesprochen wird. Zu oft werden Rituale in unserem Kulturkreis nicht wahrgenommen und bloß mit Religion, Sekten, Kulten und ihren Gewalttaten oder Voodoo-Zauber assoziiert. Aber was genau sind Rituale eigentlich? Welche Funktion haben sie und welche Wirkungen üben rituelle Abläufe auf den Menschen beziehungsweise die Gesellschaft aus? Mit diesen Fragestellungen werde ich mich in meiner Hausarbeit mit dem Thema „Rituale und ihre soziale Bedeutung am Beispiel des Rauchens“ beschäftigen. Der Fokus dieser Arbeit liegt vor allem darauf, die soziale Bedeutung von Ritualen hervorzuheben und diese am Beispiel des Rauchens als soziales Ritual zu verdeutlichen. Dazu möchte ich mich zunächst mit dem vielseitigen Begriff des „Ritual[s]“ (STOLLBERG-RILINGER 2013, S. 1) auseinandersetzen und versuchen, eine geeignete sozialwissenschaftliche Definition zu finden. Nachdem ich die Merkmale, Formen und Funktionen des Rituals beschrieben habe, werde ich die Bedeutung von Ritualen in ihren Anfangszeiten von ihrer neuzeitlichen Bedeutung unterscheiden. Danach widme ich mich dem Kapitel des Rauchens als soziales Ritual: Was sind Ritualaspekte des Rauchens und welche Rolle spielen dabei Regeln und Routinen des Rauchers? Welche Bedeutung hat das Rauchen für Raucher/innen? Ist Rauchen für sie ein Ritual? Abschließend werden die wichtigsten Ergebnisse in einem Resümee zusammengefasst, in dem die zuvor formulierten Fragestellungen beantwortet werden und ein Ausblick gegeben wird.

Riten und Rituale wurden fast ausschließliche als religiöse Phänomene betrachtet. Nach David J. Krieger und Andrea Bellinger1, war das Wort Ritual gewissermaßen ein Synonym für Gottesdienst, woran man erkannt, daß das Ritual vorwiegend ein Thema für Theologen und Religionswissenschaftler war. Neue Wissenschaften wie Ethnologie und Anthropologie, Soziologie und Psychologie führten dazu, daß man vor gut hundert Jahren anfing das Ritual eher als etwas allgemein Menschliches zu sehen, das in allen kulturellen Bereichen zu finden ist. Der Ritualbegriff wurde seither auf symbolische Handlungen allgemein angewandt. Doch auch in jüngerer Zeit hat sich in der Ritualforschung vieles verändert. Bis in die 60er Jahre des letzten Jahrhunderts hinein vermutete man hinter Ritualen psychologische und soziologische Motive, die heute in Frage gestellt werden. Die Bedeutung und Funktion des Rituals wurde außerhalb des Ritus an sich gesehen, sie musste aus ihm herausgelesen werden. Für Emile Dürkheim z.B. stand hinter dem Ritual 'das Bedürfnis soziale Solidarität zu schaffen, für Freud das Bedürfnis traumatische Ereignisse zu verdrängen, für Malinowski wiederum das Bedürfnis die natürliche Umwelt zu beeinflussen.'2

This study focuses on the issues of secrecy, ambiguity and flexibility in what is known as the 'morning circle' in German schools. The morning circle has a longstanding tradition in the German school system and is widely practised. Over the past twenty years, this tradition has been the subject of increasing academic debates, many of which have suffered from one-sided viewpoints that reduce the morning circle to a warm-up phase for the school day or a means of teaching language. What has not been addressed in these debates is the initial notion of the circle as 'the primary feature of new education' (Petersen) - which challenged traditional educational ideas -, or the question as to why the morning circle has become so widespread in German schools today.

Challenging the idea that rituals are static and emotions irrational, the volume explores the manifold qualities of emotions in ritual practices. Focusing explicitly on the relationship between emotions and rituals, it poses two central questions. First, how and to what extent do emotions shape rituals? Second, in what way are emotions ritualized in and beyond rituals? Strong emotions are generally considered to be more spontaneous and uncontrolled, whereas ritual behaviour is regarded as planned, formalized and stereotyped, and hence less emotional. However, as the volume demonstrates, rituals often reveal strong emotions among participants, are motivated by feelings, or are intended to generate them. The essays discuss the motivation for rituals; the healing function of emotions; the creation of new emotions through new media; the aspect of mimesis in the generation of feelings; individual, collective, and non-human emotions; the importance of trance and possession; staged emotions and emotions on stage; emotions in the context of martyrdom; emotions in Indian and Western dance traditions; emotions of love, sorrow, fear, aggression, and devotion. Furthermore, aesthetic and sensory dimensions, as well as emic concepts, of emotions in rituals are underscored as relevant in understanding social practice.
