The field of paremiology is traditionally an interdisciplinary one starting with folklore, paremiology, language, literature, history, and other fields, their mutual influence being a peculiar and highly valued feature for all. This book is linguistic in nature, offering a number of aspects of contemporary languages and their proverbs studied, though mostly on lexical, semantic and pragmatic aspects, based on language corpora findings, subsequently leading to proverb minima. Apart from selected proverb data excerpted from tens of languages, there is an effort to arrive at a system of proverbs having a wider orientation based on the goal set to map proverbs in a language in a systematic and reliable way, showing proverbs and their use in large, multimilion language corpora. Next to its academic goals covering proverb theory of use and system, the book may be used by lexicocographers, monolingual and comparative, and language teachers in their textbook compilation.

Sie steUen oft die einzigen Dokumente dahinschwinden der mundlicher Dberlieferungen dar; urn ihre Erhaltung soUte man daher uber aus besorgt sein, zumal Tonbandaufnahmen durch zahlreiche Einflusse, nicht zuletzt durch die kosmische Strahlung, permanent gefahrdet sind. Auf der Arbeitstagung fand unter den Teilnehmern ein Erfahrungsaustausch uber die derzeit und in naher Zukunft am besten geeigneten Tontrager zur Archivie rung von Tonbandaufnahmen statt. Die Probleme der Archivierung von mundlichen Dberlieferungen gehen jedoch weit uber die der Archivierung von Tonbandaufnahmen hinaus. Vor aUem in Osteuropa gibt es au6erordentlich umfangreiche Archive schriftlich aufgezeichneter mundlicher Traditionen. So begann beispielsweise die Sam meltatigkeit der Esten auf dies em Gebiet bereits im 17. Jahrhundert. Das Archiv der Estnischen Folklore umfa6te 1981 nicht weniger als 1.134.020 Sei 4 ten und 33.995 Stucke in einer Phonothek. Das Material aus dies en Ar chivsammlungen wurde bislang nur zu einem Bruchteil veroffentlicht und wis senschaftlich bearbeitet. Das Problem der Bewaltigung solcher Stoffmassen, auch mit modernen Methoden der Daten-und Textverarbeitung, beschaftigt zahlreiche Wissenschaftler. 3. Zum Problem der Publikation von mundlichen Dberlieferungen wurde die Frage erortert, welche Auswahl aus dem in der Regel sehr umfangreichen Material nach welchen Kriterien getroffen werden soUte. Setting out the historical national and religious characteristics of the Italians as they impact on the integration within the European Union, this study makes note of the two characteristics that have an adverse effect on Italian national identity: cleavages between north and south and the dominant role of family. It discusses how for Italians family loyalty is stronger than any other allegiance, including feelings towards their country, their nation, or the EU. Due to such subnational allegiances and values, this book notes that Italian civic society is weaker and engagement at the grass roots is less robust than one finds in other democracies, leaving politics in Italy largely in the hands of political parties. The work concludes by noting that EU membership, however, provides no magic bullet for Italy: it cannot change internal cleavages, the Italian worldview, and family values or the country’s mafia-dominated power matrix, and as a result, the underlying absence of fidelity to a shared polity—Italian or European—leave the country as ungovernable as ever.

Sprichwörter werden oft als inhaltsarme Floskeln oder Banalitäten unterschätzt. Aber es gibt auch Sprichwörter, die bis heute ihre Aktualität und Flexibilität bewahrt haben und auf die bei der verbalen Bewältigung der gesellschaftlichen Probleme gern zurückgegriffen wird. Diese Arbeit befasst sich mit dem situativen Gebrauch von 56 deutschen Sprichwörtern, die in mehreren Studien als sehr geläufig bestätigt worden sind. Sie geht der Frage nach, wie Sprichwörter heute verwendet werden. Hat sich dabei die Funktion des Sprichwortes geändert? Wie oft werden sie eingesetzt und welcher Zweck wird dabei verfolgt? Die Studie untersucht die Anwendung von Sprichwörtern, ihre funktionale Vielfalt und Abhängigkeit von den jeweiligen Situationen und Positionen im Text. Als Datenquelle wurde das Internet herangezogen, das als wertvolle Ergänzung zur traditionellen Belegsammlung für die Sprichwörterforschung genutzt wird.
