Excerpt from Das Symbol des Kreuzes bei Allen Nationen: Und die Entstehung des Kreuz-Symbols der Christlichen Kirche Diesen' einheitlichen Sinn hat das Kreuz zur Zeit der allgemeineren Verbreitung der Christenlehre eingebusst. In Folge der zufalligen Todesart eines Menschen wurde das Kreuz, statt mit dem Begrifi' des Lebens, mit dem Begrilf des Todes verbunden, und eine neue Symbolik dieses Zeichens eingefuhrt. Plotzlich wurde gelehrt, das ursprungliche Ver haltniss Gottes zu den Menschen sei ein anderes geworden, seit dem Sundenfall des ersten menschen-paares hei statt eines unmittelbaren Verkehrs Gottes mit den Menschen ein Zustand von Verlassenheit und Entfremdung eingetreten. Durch den stellvertretenden blutigen Opfertod eines von Gott mit heiligem Geist gesalbten Menschen, durch das Blut seines Kreuzes, sei der Zorn des gerechten Gottes abgewalzt worden von den an die Erlosung durch den Gekreuzigten glaubigen Menschen. Es hatte aber der Stifter der Christlichen Religion, durch seine Bezugnahme auf das Kreuz als Zeichen gott licher Erleuchtung, die bis dahin bestandene Symbolik des selben anerkannt und bestatigt. Kein Wunder also, dass die neue Auslegung den Meisten unverstandlich blieb, trotz der alten Grundlage, auf welcher sie sich erhob, dass das Wort vom Kreuz zu einem Aergerniss fuhrte, sogar als Thorheit bezeichnet wurde. Wer Jesus fur den Christus hielt, durfte nicht das Kreuz von Christus trennen von der bei allen Volkern uberlieferten Symbolik des Kreuzes. Wer solche Trennung dennoch vollzog, im Widerspruch mit der Lehre von Jesus, hatte keine Autoritat, Diejenigen als Feinde des Kreuzes von Christus zu bezeichnen, welche diesen Bruch mit der Vergangenheit nicht billigten. So wurde das Kreuz, statt eines Friedenszeichens, theilweise ein Zeichen der Feind schaft in der Menschheit.
