Obgleich der Ägyptologie bei der Frage der Schriftentstehung und Schriftentwicklung eine Schlüsselrolle zukommt, sind die frühesten Zeugnisse der Hieroglyphenschrift bislang nicht in ihrer Gesamtheit unter schriftsystematischen Gesichtspunkten untersucht worden. Erstmals wird hier ein grundlegender Überblick über das frühe ägyptische Schriftsystem gegeben: Basierend auf der Auswertung von über 3800 Schriftzeugnissen der 0.-3. Dynastie werden Regeln des Systems der Hieroglyphenschrift aufgezeigt, Einflüsse der Silbenstruktur auf die Zeichengewinnung und die Orthographie nachgewiesen, Prinzipien der phonographischen Notation und Kennzeichnung herausgestellt, der Umfang des hieroglyphischen Zeichensatzes erhoben und die Herausbildung des Satzes einkonsonantiger Phonogramme sowie der Gebrauch von Determinativen untersucht. Die gewonnenen Ergebnisse erlauben auch Rückschlüsse auf historische Fragestellungen: Z.B. auf Schriftreformen und die Frage der Schriftentstehung. A survey of ancient Egyptian mathematics across three thousand years Mathematics in Ancient Egypt traces the development of Egyptian mathematics, from the end of the fourth millennium BC—and the earliest hints of writing and number notation—to the end of the pharaonic period in Greco-Roman times. Drawing from mathematical texts, architectural drawings, administrative documents, and other sources, Annette Imhausen surveys three thousand years of Egyptian history to present an integrated picture of theoretical mathematics in relation to the daily practices of Egyptian life and social structures. Imhausen shows that from the earliest beginnings, pharaonic civilization used numerical techniques to efficiently control and use their material resources and labor. Even during the Old Kingdom, a variety of metrological systems had already been devised. By the Middle Kingdom, procedures had been established to teach mathematical techniques to scribes in order to make them proficient administrators for their king. Imhausen looks at counterparts to the notation of zero, suggests an explanation for the evolution of unit fractions, and analyzes concepts of arithmetic techniques. She draws connections and comparisons to Mesopotamian mathematics, examines which individuals in Egyptian society held mathematical knowledge, and considers which scribes were trained in mathematical ideas and why. The unique relationship between word and image in ancient Egypt is a defining feature of that ancient culture's records. All hieroglyphic texts are composed of images, and large-scale figural imagery in temples and tombs is often accompanied by texts. Epigraphy and palaeography are two distinct, but closely related, ways of recording, analyzing, and interpreting texts and images. This Handbook stresses technical issues about recording text and art and interpretive questions about what we do with those records and why we do it. It offers readers three key things: a diachronic perspective, covering all ancient Egyptian scripts from prehistoric Egypt through the Coptic era (fourth millennium BCE-first half of first millennium CE), a look at recording techniques that considers the past, present, and future, and a focus on the experiences of colleagues. The diachronic perspective illustrates the range of techniques used to record different phases of writing in different media. The consideration of past, present, and future techniques allows readers to understand and assess why epigraphy and palaeography is or was done in a particular manner by linking the aims of a particular effort with the technique chosen to reach those aims. The choice of techniques is a matter of goals and the records' work circumstances, an inevitable consequence of epigraphy being a double projection: geometrical, transcribing in two dimensions an object that exists physically in three; and mental, an interpretation, with an inevitable selection among the object's defining characteristics. The experiences of colleagues provide a range of perspectives and opinions about issues such as techniques of recording, challenges faced in the field, and ways of reading and interpreting text and image.
