2013 wäre K. Eßer hundert Jahre alt geworden. In der Franziskus-Forschung bis heute gegenwärtig, hatte er großen Einfluss auf die Neuorientierung der franziskanischen Orden und Kongregationen nach dem Konzil (1962-65). Da sein erstes Hauptwerk der kritischen Edition sowie der Auslegung des Testamentes von Franziskus galt, forscht hier D. Bieger zuerst nach den Motiven, die den rheinischen Franziskaner dazu brachten, sich diesem Thema zu widmen. Dann referiert L. Lehmann über die Studien, die nach K. Eßer zu diesem umstrittenen Text des Heiligen von Assisi erschienen sind. Der Text selbst, seine Struktur und Aussageabsicht stehen schließlich im Mittelpunkt des längsten Beitrages von P. Maranesi. Daran zu erinnern, dass Franziskus’ leidenschaftlicher letzter Text uns auch heute noch inspirieren und leiten kann, ist ganz im Sinne dessen, den die Werkstatt Franziskanische Forschung (WFF) mit dieser Gedenkschrift ehren will

In seinen letzten Lebensjahren fand jedoch eine Abkehr der Bruderschaft von ihren radikalen Anfängen statt. Die immens angewachsene Gemeinschaft der Minderbrüder entwickelte sich mehr und mehr zu einem gemäßigten, kirchlich-regulierten Orden. Vor dem Hintergrund dieser Entwicklungen ließ der totkranke Franziskus von Assisi vermutlich seinen letzten Willen festhalten, welcher uns heute durch Überlieferungen als sein Testament bekannt ist. Ausgehend davon richtet sich die Leitfrage der vorliegenden Arbeit nach der Bedeutung, die dem Testament im Rahmen der von Franziskus begründeten Glaubensbewegung zugeschrieben werde kann. Den ersten Schwerpunkt der Arbeit bildet der historische Kontext unter welchem das Testament zu betrachten ist. Es werden zu diesem Zweck die Grundzüge der hochmittelalterlichen Bettelorden dargelegt. Hierbei liegt unser Fokus insbesondere auf den Fragen inwiefern sich die Bettelorden von vorrangegangenen Armutsbewegungen unterscheiden und inwiefern Franziskus mit deren Idealen konform war. Anschließend folgt eine Betrachtung zum Lebensweg des heiligen Franziskus, um darin Bezüge zu seinem Testament herauszuarbeiten. Den zweiten Schwerpunkt bildet eine quellenkritische Betrachtung des Testaments Hierzu werden die Quelle und ihre Überlieferung vorgestellt. Zudem wird die Frage nach der Echtheit des Testaments thematisiert. Anschließend werden die inhaltlichen Aspekte des Testaments skizziert, sowie die wesentlichen Bezüge zu Franziskus Leben und seinem letzten Willen.

In den Jahren 1535 und 1536 versammelten sich die Brüder der jungen Reformgruppe der Kapuziner, die durch Vermittlung der einflussreichen Herzogin von Camerino, Katharina Cybo, im Juli 1528 von Papst Clemens VII. mit der Bulle Religionis zelus ihre päpstliche Anerkennung erhalten hatten, in dem verlassenen Kloster St. Euphemia nahe der Basilika St. Maria Maggiore in Rom, um ihr Grundsatzprogramm schriftlich festzulegen. Diese Konstitutionen, im damaligen Italienisch geschrieben, zeugen von der Aufbruchsstimmung und dem Reformwillen, der damals in der ganzen Kirche, besonders aber im Franziskanerorden herrschte. Die ältere Reform der Observanten, die 1517 zur Trennung von den Konventualen geführt hatte, war zu einer großen europaweiten Bewegung geworden, die selbst wieder der Erneuerung bedurfte. So traten Brüder der Observanz, die ein strengeres Leben in Armut und Zurückgezogenheit suchten, zu den "Brüdern vom Eremitenleben" über, die wegen ihrer langen, spitzen Kapuze bald von den Leuten in der Mark Ancona "Kapuziner" genannt wurden, ein Name, der ihnen blieb. Geblieben ist den Kapuzinern auch durch vier Jahrhunderte die Struktur und der wesentliche Inhalt ihrer Konstitutionen von 1536. Sie wurden 1552 nur leicht und 1575 nach dem Konzil von Trient stärker verändert, blieben aber im Wesentlichen bis 1975 gültig. Von diesen Konstitutionen oder Satzungen war das Leben von Tausenden von Kapuziner-Brüdern geprägt, die nach ihrer Unabhängigkeit von den Konventualen 1619 im 17. und 18. Jahrhundert ihre größte Ausbreitung erfuhren. Umso mehr erstaunt, dass dieser Grundtext noch nie vollständig in die deutsche Sprache übersetzt worden ist. Dieser Aufgabe unterzog sich, dafür bestens vorbereitet durch sein langjähriges Wirken am Historischen Institut der Kapuziner in Rom, Pater Dr. Oktavian Schmucki von Rieden in der Schweiz. Er bietet hier neben dem italienischen Text eine treue Übersetzung mit erklärenden und weiterführenden Fußnoten sowie eine historisch-kritische Einführung, die das bleibend Gültige von dem unterscheidet, was an den Konstitutionen von 1536 zeitbedingt und überholt ist. Ein Text, der nicht nur für Kapuziner interessant sein dürfte.
