Am Ende des Ersten Weltkrieges lag als Ergebnis der seit 1904 in allen Landern der Monarchie durchgefuhrten volksmusikalischen Sammlung ein Probeband vor, der unter dem Titel "Das Volkslied in Osterreich" als Muster fur Format und Schriftart aller zu edierenden Bande in deutscher, slawischer und romanischer Sprache dienen sollte. Der Zusammenbruch der Monarchie verhinderte dieses "Monumentalwerk", das aus 60 Banden bestehen sollte. Der Probeband enthalt mehr als 150 Lieder und Tanze mit Melodien, zahlreiche Spruche und Reime sowie 150 Abbildungen. In den einbegleitenden Texten des Jahres 1918 wird "Wesen und Eigenart des Unternehmens" erlautert und mit dem Leitgedanken "Den Hauptinhalt des Werkes bildet das aus der lebenden Uberlieferung geschopfte dichterische und musikalische Volksgut" wird das Ziel formuliert, das den Gelehrten aus Volkskunde, Musik und Sprachwissenschaft vorschwebte. Anlasslich seines 100-jahrigen Bestehens mochte das Osterreichische Volksliedwerk diesen Probeband als kommentierten Neudruck der Fachwelt vorlegen, erganzt mit entsprechenden Registern und beigefugter "Geschichte des Osterreichischen Volksliedwerkes". Als wertvolle Quelle zur Volksmusikforschung im osterreichischen Kaiserstaat soll dieser Sonderband nicht nur ein "Erinnerungsstuck", sondern auch dem wissenschaftlichen Diskurs der Gegenwart nutzlich sein.

This volume is the twelfth to date in a series of works in French or English presenting the epochs and movements of a Comparative History of Literatures in European Languages (Histoire Comparée des Littératures de Langues Européennes). The original intention of the editors was to publish a four-volume history of European literature from 1760-1820, and the first of these volumes, Des Lumières au Romantisme. Genres en Vers, appeared as long ago as 1982. The volumes Genres en Prose and Théâtre are still awaited. In their absence the present volume, Epoche im _berblick, attempts a more comprehensive and rigorous treatment of the period and its historiographical problems than was initially planned, providing the reader with an overview of sixty eventful years of European literary history years in which German Classicism coincided with the birth, initially in Germany and England, of Romanticism. And at the centre of this turbulent period of European intellectual and literary history stands the French Revolution.

A new 2023 translation into American English from the original manuscript of Nietzsche's 1869 "Die Geburt der Tragödie" / The Birth of Tragedy. The original German follows the English translation for reference. This is volume 1 in The Complete Works of Friedrich Nietzsche from Newcomb Livraria Press. This chronological, systematic set of Nietzsche's works is the first ever bilingual "Hauptwerke" or complete major works of Nietzsche published in English & the original German. The Birth of Tragedy has two different subtitles from two editions both published by Nietzsche; the first was "from the spirit of music" and the second "Hellenism or Pessimism". Composed from essays written from 1869-71, The Birth of Tragedy was first printed in Leipzig in 1872 under the title "Die Geburt der Tragödie aus dem Geiste der Musik”. In 1886, the same publisher printed a new new edition under the new title "Die Geburt der Tragödie oder Griechentum und Pessimismus" with a second preface "Versuch einer Selbstkritik” where Nietzsche criticizes his own work. Both prefaces from these two versions are included here. Here in his first major work, Nietzsche articulates a semi-Hegelian tragic dichotomy of pre-cosmogonic energy underlying all of human struggle made manifest most explicitly in Greek tragedy. For the Greeks understood most clearly the forces which were driving the ethos of their civilization, finding a balance between chaos and order. It is a suspiciously metaphysical description of the origins of human culture from a man who believed it was his purpose as a “world-historical” individual to destroy the lie of the existence of Metaphysics. For as much as he criticized German Critical and Idealistic Philosophy of German, he shared an unwavering admiration for the Greek Philosophers, nearly to the point of worship.
