In a large-scale nuclear emergency affecting food and agriculture, the release of radionuclides to the environment can severely impact the food chain and human health. Up-to-date information of soil, water and crops are pertinent to informing decisions that prevent potentially contaminated products from reaching consumers. However, traditional management and visualisation of data are constrained in response times and decision-making accuracy as they are often not centralized and performed manually. Developments in information technology (IT) allow for Decision Support System (DSS) tools and algorithms to enhance real-time management of large volumes of data and decision-making in a spatio-temporal context. These IT support functions increase the capacity of stakeholders to focus on the most important matters at hand – ensuring food and consumer safety. This publication presents the challenges and solutions of real-time data management, geo-visualisation and decision making, as well as two case-studies of how innovative IT systems can assist in nuclear emergency response affecting food and agriculture. One of the case studies presented is by the Soil and Water Management and Crop Nutrition Laboratory of the Joint FAO/IAEA Division; the other case study by Japanese Competent Authorities in the aftermath of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident.

This Open Access volume explains how major nuclear and radiological emergencies (NREs) can have implications at local, national and international level. The response to NREs requires a competent decision-making structure, clear communication and effective information exchange. National veterinary services have the responsibility to plan, design and manage animal production system in their countries. These activities cover animal health, animal movement control, production control and improvement, and control of the products of animal origin before their placement on the market. Release of radionuclides after NREs can cause substantial contamination in the animal production systems. Critical responsibility of veterinary authorities is therefore to prevent such contamination, establish early response mechanisms to mitigate the consequences and prevent placement of contaminated products of animal origin on the market for human consumption. This work summarizes the critical technical points for effective management of NREs for national veterinary services.

Disasters such as earthquakes, cyclones, floods, heat waves, nuclear accidents, and large scale pollution incidents take lives and cause exceptionally large health problems. The majority of large-scale disasters affect the most vulnerable populations, which are often comprised of people of extreme ages, in remote living areas, with endemic poverty, and with low literacy. Health-related emergency disaster risk management (Health-EDRM) [1] refers to the systematic analysis and management of health risks surrounding emergencies and disasters; it plays an important role in reducing hazards and vulnerability along with extending preparedness, response, and recovery measures. This concept encompasses risk analyses and interventions, such as accessible early warning systems, timely deployment of relief workers, and the provision of suitable drugs and medical equipment, to decrease the impact of disaster on people before, during, and after disaster events. Disaster risk profiling and interventions can be at the personal/household, community, and system/political levels; they can be targeted at specific health risks including respiratory issues caused by indoor burning, re-emergence of infectious disease due to low vaccination coverage, and gastrointestinal problems resulting from unregulated waste management. Unfortunately, there has been a major gap in the scientific literature regarding Health-EDRM. The aim of this Special Issue of IJERPH was to present papers describing/reporting the latest disaster and health risk analyses, as well as interventions for health-related disaster risk management, in an effort to address this gap and facilitate major global policies and initiatives for disaster risk reduction.
