Data Representativity and Granularity in Spanish Syntax focuses on the dialogue between Generative Grammar, Variationism, and experimental linguistics with a unique emphasis on Spanish linguistics. Combining formal syntax and empirical data collection, this volume analyzes and compares various data collection methods in syntactic theory, and examines a wide variety of approaches to gain novel insight in this emerging area. Through the case study of subject properties in Spanish, with an emphasis on how differences in data collection and data analysis standards may shape our perception of the object of study, this book addresses the following questions: (a) How do the data gathered through the standard methodology in each discipline diverge (if at all) and why? and (b) What kind of research questions can be answered with the standard methodology in each field? The volume argues for methodological crosspollination to avoid forcing data to conform to field-specific expectations and to appreciate language variation for what it has to tell us about linguistic theory, marrying the goals of Generative Grammar with data-driven research. This is an essential resource for researchers in the area of formal and generative syntax, linguists with an interest in data collection standard in syntax, and graduate or advanced undergraduate students in the field of Spanish linguistics. The connection between past and present is evidenced through language data on Mexican Spanish gathered from various sources. The historical background of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries is revisited from the standpoint of stratification, conflict, and economic adjustments that fit within the model of modernity. This book advances both theoretical and methodological applications deemed necessary to crafting new research perspectives in Latin American sociolinguistics and the sociology of language. Seminal literary samples of Mexican and Latin American literature are presented systematically to exemplify the presence and vitality of linguistic variables along with their historical and social cultural context, offering a comprehensible and digestible approach to this field of study. Mexican Spanish in the Twentieth Century is a comprehensive volume for students and researchers of Hispanic linguistics, dialectology, and sociolinguistics. It will appeal to readers with an interest in the diversity of Latin American Spanish.

Explorando las relaciones intradiscursivas: Un enfoque multidimensional takes a multifaceted approach to provide a complete and integrative analysis of intra-discursive relationships. This edited collection approaches intra-discursive relationships from different discursive dimensions (such as informative, argumentative, or modal) which influence the construction of the text to identify common and functional relationships to any type of discourse. Covering a wide range of topics from multiple perspectives, the volume arrives at a global, multidimensional, and integrated vision that allows the study of relationships to be defined without apriorism or exclusions.Drawing on real texts from various corpora of Spanish, the contributions explore the connections between the basic units of the text in order to construct a linguistic model that goes beyond the sentence level. This research offers both general and focused studies on specific phenomena of great interest within a well-constructed and comprehensive framework. This innovative volume is ideal for researchers and teachers of discourse analysis, linguistics, and Spanish as a foreign language. Additionally, Explorando las relaciones intradiscursivas complements undergraduate and graduate studies in pragmatics and linguistics.

Offering an updated approach to studying digital discourse in public contexts, it is the first of its kind written in Spanish. The volume focuses on the characteristic linguistic features associated with digital communication and informal oral writing styles, such as reduplication of vowels, consonants, acronyms, and shortenings, code-switching and language preference, and the insertion of multimodal and graphical elements. A comprehensive and unique volume, La informalización del discurso digital público is ideal for researchers and postgraduate students interested in digital discourse, sociolinguistics, and media studies. Multiword Expressions written by Manfred Sailer and has been published by Language Science Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018 with Bilingualism categories.

Multiword expressions (MWEs) are a challenge for both the natural language applications and the linguistic theory because they often defy the application of the machinery developed for free combinations where the default is that the meaning of an utterance can be predicted from its structure. There is a rich body of primarily descriptive work on MWEs for many European languages but comparative work is little. The volume brings together MWE experts to explore the benefits of a multilingual perspective on MWEs. The ten contributions in this volume look at MWEs in Bulgarian, English, French, German, Maori, Modern Greek, Romanian, Serbian, and Spanish. They discuss prominent issues in MWE research such as classification of MWEs, their formal grammatical modeling, and the description of individual MWE types from the point of view of different theoretical frameworks, such as Dependency Grammar, Generative Grammar, Head-driven Phrase Structure Grammar, Lexical Functional Grammar, Lexicon Grammar.

Valency patterns and valency orientation have been frequent topics of research under different perspectives, often poorly connected. Diachronic studies on these topics is even less systematic than synchronic ones. The papers in this book bring together two strands of research on valency, i.e. the description of valency patterns as worked out in the Leipzig Valency Classes Project (ValPaL), and the assessment of a language's basic valency and its possible orientation. Notably, the ValPaL does not provide diachronic information concerning the valency patterns investigated: one of the aims of the book is to supplement the available data with data from historical stages of languages, in order to make it profitably exploitable for diachronic research. In addition, new research on the diachrony of basic valency and valency alternations can deepen our understanding of mechanisms of language change and of the propensity of languages or language families to exploit different constructional patterns related to transitivity.

Subject Pronoun Expression In Spanish written by Ana M. Carvalho and has been published by Georgetown University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-02-26 with Foreign Language Study categories.

Much recent scholarship has sought to identify the linguistic and social factors that favor the expression or omission of subject pronouns in Spanish. This volume brings together leading experts on the topic of language variation in Spanish to provide a panoramic view of research trends, develop probabilistic models of grammar, and investigate the impact of language contact on pronoun expression. The book consists of three sections. The first studies the distributional patterns and conditioning forces on subject pronoun expression in four monolingual varieties—Dominican, Colombian, Mexican, and Peninsular—and makes cross-dialectal comparisons. In the second section, experts explore Spanish in contact with English, Maya, Catalan, and Portuguese to determine the extent to which each language influences this syntactic variable. The final section examines the acquisition of variable subject pronoun expression among monolingual and bilingual children as well as adult second language learners.
