Excerpt from David's Harp in Song and Story At one of the last sessions of the Presbyterian General Assembly held in Pittsburg in the month of May, the following communication was read by the stated clerk: "To the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church, now in session in Pittsburg: "Dear Fathers and Brethren - The undersigned beg leave to state that they are chairmen of committees appointed by the General Assembly of the United Presbyterian church now in this city and by the synod of the Reformed Presbyterian church, respectively, for the purpose of securing a metrical version of the Book of Psalms which will be correct and elegant and conform to the present canons of literary taste in the English tongue. The object proposed is not to commit any body of Christians to the use of such book in whole or in part when completed, but to secure, if possible, a metrical translation of the Psalter of such excellence as will commend it to the taste and judgment of all who may desire to use the Psalms in praise, and as will secure it a place in the hymnody of all the churches. "It is believed that the material for such a version is already in hand and is to be found in the many versions and the many manuals of the churches, as also in many separate individual renderings. Thus, while new renderings would not be excluded from consideration, the proposed work would be chiefly that of collation, selection and compilation of metrical translations now in existence. "We are instructed by the bodies which we represent to solicit the co-operation in this revision of other bodies of Christians which have authorized in their standards the use of the Psalms in praise. "We therefore request this General Assembly, representing the largest and most influential of the Presbyterian bodies, to consider this proposal favorably and to appoint a committee to co-operate in this work, being assured that your example in so doing would be readily followed by all the Reformed churches. David S Harp written by Alfred Sendrey and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1964 with Jews categories.

"From the beginning the Jews were allowed no graven images. Their deep creative impulses found expression in poetry and song--in a musical tradition that was not only to enrich ancient Israel but all civilization for the next four thousand years. The first popular treatment of the music of biblical times, David's Harp is a work of scholarship that chronicles the history of the Jews through a record of their singular art. Here, for the first time, are full descriptions of the origins, forms, and instrumentation of Hebrew music set in a dramatic narrative of the people who created it. Drawing upon recent archeological discoveries and their own biblical research, the authors achieve dynamic portraits of Hebrew monarchs, as well as unique accounts of such hereditary guilds as the Temple singers--a group that staged the first recorded strike in history. David's Harp presents a vibrant picture of the rustic and the urban Jews celebrating their festivals and expressing their sentiments in an uninhibited secular music. It describes the sacred liturgy, performed only by the Levites; and it offers a thoroughly engrossing account of the shofar, the ram's horn of Abraham, which is the only ancient Hebrew instrument that has survived unchanged to modern times. The authors bring their story to a dramatic conclusion with a discussion of the common musical legacy shared by the two great faiths of the Western world. They show how the sacred liturgy of the Christians and of the Jews--for example plainchant and the songs of the Patriarchs--developed from the same source: the music of ancient Israel. Interspersed with the song and psalm that have come down to us through the centuries, David's Harp is a provocative work rich in originality and discovery. Layman and musician alike will find it a thoroughly enjoyable reading experience--one that adds a new dimension to the understanding of biblical culture and of the imperishable music that is the mutual heritage of the Judeo-Christian world."--Dust jacket.

"Who were 'the folk'? This question has haunted generations of radicals and reactionaries alike. The Folk traces the musical culture of these elusive figures in Britain and the US during a crucial period from 1870 to 1930, and beyond to the contemporary alt-right. It follows an insistent set of disputes surrounding the practice of collecting, ideas of racial belonging, the poetics of nostalgia, and the pre-history of European fascism. It is the biography of a people who exist only as a symptom of the modern imagination and the archaeology of a landscape directing the flow of global politics today"--
