DAVID, the Shepherd King is the story of the greatest king of Israel. The complexities of his life are staggering. He shepherded both sheep and people. He was an empire builder but a failed parent. He was an adulterer and a murderer. He was a warrior and an outlaw. He was a musician, composing beautiful psalms still treasured and sung today. His name appears more than a thousand times in the Bible, more than any other individual. Above all, he was faithful to his calling as the mashiach, the anointed one of the Lord God.

Of all the characters bequeathed to us by the Hebrew Bible, none is more compelling or complex than David. Divinely blessed, musically gifted, brave, and eloquent, David's famous slaying of Goliath also confirms that he is a redoubtable man of war. Yet, when his son Absalom rebels, David is dogged by the accusation than he will lose his kingdom because he is not merely a man of war, but a man of 'bloods' - guilty of shedding innocent blood. In this book, for the first time, this language of 'innocent blood' and 'bloodguilt' is traced throughout David's story in the books of Samuel and 1 Kings. The theme emerges initially in Saul's pursuit of David and resurfaces regularly as David rises and men like Nabal, Saul, Ishbosheth, and Abner fall. Innocent blood and bloodguilt also turn out to be central to David's reign. This is seen in a surprising way in David's killing of Uriah, but also in the subsequent deaths of his sons, Amnon and Absalom, his general, Amasa, and even in David's encounters with Shimei. The problem rears its head again when the innocent blood of the Gibeonites shed by Saul comes back to haunt David's kingdom. Finally, the problem reappears when Solomon succeeds David and orchestrates the executions of Joab and Shimei, and the exile of Abiathar. Attending carefully to the text and drawing extensively on previous biblical scholarship, David J. Shepherd suggests that innocent blood is not only a pre-eminent concern of David, and his story in Samuel and 1 Kings, but also shapes the entirety of David's history.

During a time when Israel demanded a king the LORD provided a king for Israel (1 Samuel 8). We are told that Israel was rejecting God so God relented and gave them what they asked for, but they were forewarned that the king would take from them. Saul was anointed as the first king of Israel. Saul stood a whole head taller than anyone and was considered good-looking. Sadly, Saul lacked integrity and chose not to obey God wholeheartedly, so the LORD removed His anointing on Saul (1 Samuel 13:13-14). The LORD told the prophet, Samuel, that He wanted him to go and anoint one of Jesse's sons in Bethlehem to be the new king. Sadly, even the prophet looked for outward appearances when trying to figure out who would be the next king. God kindly reminded him that man looks at outward appearances, but He was looking for a man after His own heart (1 Samuel 16:7). Through David's story, we see the sovereignty of God allowing circumstances to unfold in His timing and not mans. Even though David was anointed king as a young boy in front of his family it took years before he became king. David knew the heights of fame and notoriety among the people for his prowess as a warrior. He also knew the suffering for this fame because it caused King Saul's jealousy to progressively increase causing David to live many years on the run in the desert and caves of Judah. David's heart for the people was evident in the ways he sought to protect them when King Saul should have been the one fighting for the people. Despite King Saul's rage against David, he still honored his position as God's anointed leader until King Saul died. The other characteristic that David models for us to imitate is repentance. When David was confronted by the prophet Nathan, David repented of his sin with Bathsheba. He still suffered the consequences for his actions, but he remained faithful to the nation and in honoring God. We have no clue what God is orchestrating in history, but we know He is always at work to bring forth His redemption that brings healing to individuals and to nations.

"While sketching every period of his life, I have concentrated myself on those passages which trace the steps by which the shepherd became the king. It was in these that his character was formed, his sweetest psalms composed, and those manifold experiences encountered which enabled him to interpret and utter the universal heart of man." -- From the Preface
