Pares (1867-1949) was an English historian and academic known for his work on Russia. He first visited Russia in 1898 and founded the first school of Russian Studies at the University of Liverpool in 1907. At the outbreak of the First World War he was appointed official observer to the Russian Army in the field and was later seconded to the staff of the British Embassy in Petrograd. In 1919 he was awarded a KBE for his services to British relations with Russia but was banned from re-entering Russia by the new communist government until 1935. This record of his time with the Russian Army from 1914-15 was published in 1915. Illustrated with 8 maps and a photograph of the author.

A full century later, our picture of World War I remains one of wholesale, pointless slaughter in the trenches of the Western front. Expanding our focus to the Eastern front, as David R.
