Met enige regelmaat duikt de stelling op dat de literatuur dood is. Waarmee bedoeld wordt dat de literatuur er niet toe doet en dat hetzelfde geldt voor de schrijver. In het essay De ander bestaat niet rekent Christine Otten af met dat pessimisme. Schrijven is voor haar geen vrijblijvende bezigheid. Ze houdt een vurig pleidooi voor de noodzaak om je als schrijver onvoorwaardelijk te verbinden met je personages en hun thematiek, en daarmee het risico te lopen zélf te veranderen. Aan de hand van haar eigen ontwikkeling als auteur laat ze zien hoe literatuur ingezet kan worden voor emancipatie en persoonlijke bevrijding van schrijver en lezer. ‘(...) de literatuur en het schrijverschap herbergen een potentieel bevrijdende (en daardoor subversieve) kracht die je op zoveel manieren en juist ook op plekken kunt inzetten waar literatuur wordt gezien als ‘niet voor ons’ of ‘hoge kunst’. Dat komt uiteindelijk de literatuur ten goede, want andere stemmen, stijlen en perspectieven krijgen de ruimte.’
