Saul krijgt te maken met een geduchte tegenstander: David. Ze krijgen een haat-liefdeverhouding. David, lieveling van God, achterkleinzoon van de Moabitische Ruth, en daarmee derde generatie allochtoon, grijpt de macht. Als hij de ark van het verbond, het symbool van de godsdienst, naar Jeruzalem heeft overgebracht, eindigt dit deel. Hoogtepunten in deel 3: het gevecht tussen David en Goliat, het hartverscheurende gedicht waarin David de dood van Saul en Jonatan beweent (`Jouw liefde was mij dierbaar, meer dan die van vrouwen ) en de liefde tussen Boaz en Ruth.
