Ieder, die veel met misdadigers in aanraking komt, weet, dat door die lieden en hun aanhang woorden en zinnen gebruikt worden, waarvan de beteekenis voor een oningewijde moeilijk of in het geheel niet te begrijpen is.Men noemt dit gebruik van verouderde, verbasterde, uit vreemde talen al of niet gewijzigd overgenomen of andersgebruikte woorden of het toekennen van een andere dan de gewone beteekenis aan overigens goed Nederlandsch, het spreken van de boeventaal, ook wel dieventaal of Bargoensch. De misdadigers spreken van de Gabbertaal (Gabber = Kameraad).Waar een groot deel der kroeghouders van het minste allooi, slaapsteehouders, prostituées, opkoopers enz. enz., evenals kwartjesvinders en beroepsmisdadigers zich van deze boeventaal bedienen en laatstgenoemden zich zelfs zoozeer aan het gebruik daarvan gewend hebben, dat zij het niet kunnen laten ook in het verkeer met personen, die niet tot hunne vrienden gerekend kunnen worden, hunne eigenaardige uitdrukkingen te bezigen, daar is het wenschelijk, dat in de eerste plaats de politie, maar ook de justitie- en gevangenis-ambtenaren moeite doen om die taal te leeren verstaan.
