Toen de Franse regeringscommissaris Georges Cuvier in 1811 de Groningse universiteit bezocht, verbaasde hij zich erover dat deze universiteit in een uithoek van het keizerrijk al bijna twee eeuwen een baken van beschaving en verlichting was. En zo is het nog altijd. De Groningse universiteit, die 400 jaar bestaat, paart sinds haar oprichting een sterke internationale uitstraling aan een actieve rol in het culturele, intellectuele en economische leven van Noord-Nederland. Soms dreigde deze excentrische ligging haar fataal te worden, maar uit elke crisis kwam de universiteit sterker tevoorschijn. Zij telde geleerden van Europees formaat, zoals de wiskundige Johann Bernoulli, de medicus Petrus Camper, de astronoom J.C. Kapteyn en de filosoof/psycholoog Gerardus Heymans. Nu behoort zij tot de beste honderd universiteiten van de wereld. Klaas van Berkel vertelt de kleurrijke geschiedenis van de universiteit, met oog voor het detail én de grote lijn. Dit eerste deel beslaat de periode 1614-1876.

Izaac van Deen (1804-1869) was een pionier in de fysiologie en de eerste Joodse hoogleraar in Nederland. In 1851 werd hij als buitengewoon hoogleraar in Groningen aangesteld. Ruim vijftig jaar na de juridische gelijkstelling van Nederlandse Joden betekende dit een doorbraak in het emancipatieproces. De moeizame totstandkoming van deze aanstelling geeft een interessant beeld van het universitaire leven van die dagen. Twee decennia later werd de eerste vrouwelijke student in Groningen toegelaten - Aletta Jacobs, eveneens van Joodse huize. De Groningse universiteit bouwde zo verder aan haar liberale reputatie.

In the course of the development of modern constitutionalism the biennium of 1848-9 has been continuously underrated. No collection of its constitutions has ever been published, nor any systematic interpretation of them has yet been written in spite of the fact that during the revolutionary upheaval of 1848-9, more than 40 constitutions were, with at least some sort of public legitimacy, drafted in Europe and most of them enacted.The twelve articles assembled in this volume were written to illustrate, with a focus on the organization of legislative and executive powers, some major aspects of this struggle. Besides several German, Italian, and Austro-Hungarian constitutions and those of France, Switzerland, and the Netherlands, the constitution of Wisconsin is deliberately included to document the whole range of ideas from nearly unconcealed opposition to major constitutional concessions to the rule of popular sovereignty in a democratic republic and to demonstrate the similarities as well as the differences between European and American constitutional concepts at the time. As a result, the years 1848-9 stand out for some major results that transformed the performance of modern constitutionalism in Europe during the second half of the nineteenth and in the twentieth centuries.
