In dit nu reeds klassieke werk uit 1985 biedt de hedendaagse Franse denker Marcel Gauchet een weids en tegelijk complex panorama van de logische verbanden tussen ontwikkelingen in de religie en ontwikkelingen in de politiek. Beide hebben elkaar door heel de geschiedenis tot op vandaag voortdurend vormgegeven. Meestal in het verborgene en onbewust, maar daarom niet minder doorslaggevend. In tegenstelling tot alle gekende maatschappijen uit het verleden laat onze westerse maatschappij zich niet langer bepalen door de religie. In die zin is ze ‘uit de religie getreden’, en wel via de ‘onttovering van de wereld’. Die onttovering heeft zich vooral de laatste decennia doorgezet, maar is een proces geweest van eeuwen. Niet zozeer een proces tegen de religie in, maar in de eerste plaats een proces van en vanuit de religie zelf. Met ankerpunten zoals de opkomst van de ‘axiale religies’, het ontstaan van het monotheïsme, de ontwikkeling van de christelijke idee van incarnatie en de Reformatie. Zij liggen mee aan de basis van het statuut van de middeleeuwse koning, van de betekenis van de absolute monarchie of zelfs van de opkomst van de democratie. Zij werpen overigens vandaag nog hun schaduw op allerlei ontwikkelingen binnen de democratie. Telkens analyseert dit boek de onderliggende logica ervan, de tegenstellingen en de samenhangen. Niet dat het alleen een kwestie van denken zou zijn geweest: vaak loopt het feitelijk handelen en ervaren, zowel religieus als politiek, vooruit op het expliciete denken. Allemaal erg onvoorspelbaar dus, maar uiteindelijk toch perfect te begrijpen in zijn logische structuren. Het heeft ons gemaakt tot wie wij zijn.

Religious and moral pluralism is intrinsic to present-day society. Pluralism includes both the diversity of religions and worldviews (external pluralism), and the diverse conceptions of a transcendent reality and a good life within religions (internal pluralism). This book deals with the challenges this pluralism poses for Christian adult education. The goal is to form a clearer picture of how educators deal with pluralism in their practice. The premise is that this is particularly evident in the goal orientations and the educational methods they choose. This book presents a typology of religio-moral education which is empirically tested in the Catholic context in the Netherlands. It explores the goal orientations and methods of religious and moral educators, and examines the crucial relation between them. The educator's choices are also evaluated in the light of a considered approach to pluralism. Isolde Driesen (1971) worked as a junior researcher at the Faculty of Theology of the Radboud University Nijmegen on the research-project Pluralism and Christian adult education.

Deze economisch-antropologische studie gaat over de rol van handelaren en handelsallianties in het proces van economische verandering dat in de tweede helft van de negentiende eeuw op het eiland Madura op gang kwam na de invoering van het rechtstreekse koloniale bestuur. Het boek begint met een uiteenzetting over de sociaal-geografische omstandigheden en de historische achtergronden van het proces van economische veranderingen, waarbij het eiland geleidelijk werd betrokken in het Indonesische handelsverkeer. In het tweede deel wordt ingegaan op de economie van het dorp Prenduan, waar De Jonge een jaar veldwerk deed, is een van de belangrijkste handelsplaatsen aan de zuidkust van Madura. Sinds de ontsluiting van het eiland spelen handelaren uit het dorp een voortrekkers rol in de Madurese economie. Het laatste deel van het boek beschrijft de belangrijkste groep ondernemers uit het dorp, de tabakshandelaren. Tabak vormt het voornaamste produkt van Madura. Handelaren uit Prenduan beheersen de handel in het oostelijke deel van het eiland en monopoliseren de belangrijke handelscontacten met Java. Hun activiteiten zijn in belangrijke mate bevorderd door de verbreiding en verfijning van de islam. Dankzij deze godsdienst konden ze zich als groep emanciperen en hun positie legitimeren. De ontwikkelingen in de takbakswereld zijn in hoge mate representatief voor de veranderingen in andere handelssectoren. De auteur verschaft in dit boek nieuwe inzichten in de aard van economische ontwikkeling in perifere gebieden, rol van handelaren in dit proces en de relatie handel en islam.
