Addressing decades of rain forest destruction, concerned scientists, often in concert with various environmental movements, have amassed an impressive amount of information on deforestation in areas throughout the world. In Tropical Forests, Rudel draws upon hundreds of these studies to develop a broader perspective on the problem of deforestation. Ecuador is the third-largest foreign supplier of crude oil to the western United States. As the source of this oil, the Ecuadorian Amazon has borne the far-reaching social and environmental consequences of a growing U.S. demand for petroleum and the dynamics of economic globalization it necessitates. Crude Chronicles traces the emergence during the 1990s of a highly organized indigenous movement and its struggles against a U.S. oil company and Ecuadorian neoliberal policies. Against the backdrop of mounting government attempts to privatize and liberalize the national economy, Suzana Sawyer shows how neoliberal reforms in Ecuador led to a crisis of governance, accountability, and representation that spurred one of twentieth-century Latin America’s strongest indigenous movements. Through her rich ethnography of indigenous marches, demonstrations, occupations, and negotiations, Sawyer tracks the growing sophistication of indigenous politics as Indians subverted, re-deployed, and, at times, capitulated to the dictates and desires of a transnational neoliberal logic. At the same time, she follows the multiple maneuvers and discourses that the multinational corporation and the Ecuadorian state used to circumscribe and contain indigenous opposition. Ultimately, Sawyer reveals that indigenous struggles over land and oil operations in Ecuador were as much about reconfiguring national and transnational inequality—that is, rupturing the silence around racial injustice, exacting spaces of accountability, and rewriting narratives of national belonging—as they were about the material use and extraction of rain-forest resources.

[ES] En esta Tesis Doctoral se ponen de manifiesto las pautas seguidas para obtener el carácter y la evolución de los paisajes ganaderos extensivos de las áreas de montaña, tomando como ejemplo, para ello, tres espacios diferenciados y contrastados de montaña media peninsular (valle medio y alto del río Saja, sierras de Béjar y Candelario y macizo de Las Villuercas). El estudio se desarrolla a partir de la realización de un análisis integral del paisaje basado en la metodología Landscape Character Assessment (LCA). Tras la obtención de las áreas potenciales de paisaje, el análisis se centra únicamente en los espacios ganaderos extensivos, con el objeto de apreciar cómo han influido éstos en la dinámica paisajística y cuáles son sus elementos más destacados, que a la postre, los definirán como tipos de paisajes singulares dentro del contexto general. Los aspectos metodológicos más destacados son los relativos a los proporcionados por LCA y a los utilizados para catalogar y definir los diferentes espacios ganaderos extensivos, tales como: áreas pretenses, vías pecuarias, etc. [EN] In this Doctoral Thesis exposed the guidelines followed to obtain the character an evolution of the extensive livestock landscapes of mountain areas using the example, for it, three distinct and contrasting spaces of mind-mountain of Spain (middle and upper valley of the river Saja, mountains of Béjar and Candelario and mountain of Las Villuercas). Tha study was developed from the realization a landscape analysis based on Landscape Character Assessment (LCA). After getting the potential areas of landscape, the analysis focuses only on the extensive livestock areas, in order to appreciate how it have influenced on landscape dynamics and what are its most important elements defining them as types of unique lansdcapes in the general context. The most important methodological aspects are provided by LCA and those used to catalog and define the different extensive livestock areas, such as: pasture areas, paths for cattle.

Broadening Horizons is a series of international congresses dedicated to researchers, including postgraduate students, in the early-stages of their careers who are involved in a number of different disciplinary areas in the study of the Ancient Near East and the Eastern Mediterranean. The general aim of the conferences is to encourage discussion of new topics and to promote the exchange of ideas, data and scientific information among students and scholars of many different specialties – archaeology, prehistory, history, anthropology, archaeobiology and philology – throughout the geographical area known as the Ancient Near East. The 3rd of these congresses was held in Barcelona (Spain), from the 19th to the 21st of July 2010 in the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, following previous congresses which had taken place at Ghent University (Belgium) in 2006 and at Université Lyon 2 (France) in 2007. This volume includes not only the very interesting and diverse set of papers presented in Barcelona but also the invited contributions of the key speakers. These two sections are followed by a final paper by the editors about the trajectory of the BH conferences and about the particularities and difficulties confronting young scholars who are doing research in the Near East.

This volume compiles the papers presented at the seventh edition of the Conference on PPN Chipped and Ground Stone Industries of the Fertile Crescent, held in Barcelona from 14 to 17 February 2012. This series of conferences/workshops started nineteen years ago - the first meeting was organised in Berlin in 1993 - and is devoted to the study of the lithic record in the Pre-Pottery Neolithic of the Near East and neighbouring regions. The seventh of these conferences was organised by the Institució Milà i Fontanals (Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas) and the Prehistory Department (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona). This volume includes a total number of 36 articles, covering a wide range of topics and disciplines related to lithic studies in the Levant over a long chronological time span (from the final stages of the Epipalaeolithic/Natufian to the Halaf period). The publication of the conference proceedings is thus an interesting synthesis of the current state of lithic studies on the Pre-Pottery Neolithic of the Near East, and consolidates this specific series of conferences as a key tool to maintain and stimulate the vitality of high quality research into the Near Eastern lithic record.
