En la obra de Gerardo Montiel la dicotomía entre el bien y el mal funciona como punto de partida para la discusión estética. Como el filósofo francés Georges Bataille, Montiel considera que el mal es aquella parte oscura que debemos reconocer y asumir para encontrar nuestras verdades más profundas. La relación del bien con la belleza es uno de los vínculos que san Agunstín sancionaba al expresar las relaciones que el cosmos tenía con dios. Si lo visible era bella era porque se identificaba con el creador: todo era espejo de la divinidad. Este concepto se mantiene vigente hasta antes del romanticismo, cuando se establece que no todo lo bello tiene que ser bueno. Dicha ruptura inaugura una línea de independencia para el trabajo del artista que debe, entonces, desligarse de los problemas morales y enfrentarse con las preocupaciones estéticas y las discusiones éticas.
