Hoe een schrijver aan schoonheid ten onder gaat ‘Het ernstigste wat ik sinds De Buddenbrooks geschreven heb,’ zei Thomas Mann over De dood in Venetië (1911). Het ernstigste, dat betekent bij Mann altijd: hier gaat het over hemzelf. Hoofdpersoon in deze novelle is de schrijver Gustav von Aschenbach, wiens indrukwekkende literaire productie gebaseerd is op een leven van Pruisische discipline en ascese. Hij raakt geheel uit balans als hij in Venetië de beeldschone Poolse jongen Tadzio ontmoet. Terwijl de stad wordt geteisterd door een cholera-epidemie raakt Von Aschenbach volledig in de ban van de jongen, in wie hij Eros verpersoonlijkt ziet. Een geval van knapenliefde bij een ouder wordende kunstenaar, somber-ironisch en doortrokken van de dood. De vertaling van De dood in Venetië werd voor deze editie geheel herzien door Hans Hom. Deze uitgave bevat tevens de vroege kunstenaarsnovelle Tristan (1903), het Indische sprookje De verwisselde hoofden (1940) en De wet, een verhaal over Mozes dat in 1943 in New York verscheen in de bundel The Ten Commandments. Ten Short Novels of Hitler’s War against the Moral Code. Met een uitgebreid nawoord van Guido Snel.

First published in 1912, "Death in Venice" is Thomas Mann's novella concerning Gustav von Aschenbach, a famous middle-aged author who in order to alleviate a terrible case of writer's black decides to go on holiday. Gustav first travels to the coast of Austria-Hungary but soon is overcome with the feeling that he is meant to travel to Venice. On Lido Island he takes up residence in a suite at the Grand Hotel des Bains. During dinner one evening at the hotel he sees a family at a table nearby and becomes fascinated by the beauty of their adolescent fourteen year old boy named Tadzio. His interest in Tadzio at first enlivens in him an uplifting and artistic spirit, however as the days pass his interest begins to grow into an unhealthy obsession. As the weather in Venice turns hot and humid, Gustav, feeling his health to be in decline, decides to travel to a cooler locale, however a mix up with his luggage, draws him back to the hotel and Tadzio, which he inwardly rejoices. Though Gustav never acts on his feelings regarding the boy he nevertheless feels himself drawn down a path of ruinous inward desire. A classic depiction of emotional suffering, "Death in Venice" brilliantly depicts the tragic intensity of inner psychological torment. This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper and follows the translation of Martin C. Doege.

Er bewahrt zwar stets eine scheue Distanz zu dem Knaben, der späte Gefühlsrausch jedoch, dem sich der sonst so selbstgestrenge von Aschenbach nun willenlos hingibt, macht aus ihm letztlich einen würdelosen Greis.

Seminar paper from the year 2007 in the subject Dutch (Literature, Culture and Language), grade: 2,0, Free University of Berlin, language: Dutch, abstract: Als men een literair werk wil gaan bespreken stelt men zich vooral twee vragen: waarover gaat het boek en wat is er kenmerkend voor. Als je dat kan, kan je ook noch op een andere manier een tekst gaan interpreteren. Je kan een literair tekst met een andere tekst gaan vergelijken. Het doel van het volgende werkstuk is een vergelijking van twee novellen. In deze nota probeer ik de parallellen tussen twee verhalen te vinden, namelijk tussen de novelle De dood in Veneti van de Duitse schrijver Thomas Mann en Het engeltje van de Nederlandse auteur Wessel te Gussinklo. Tussen het verschijnen van deze beide teksten liggen bijna honderd jaar terug maar het is verrassend hoeveel overeenkomsten tussen deze verhalen bestaan. De vergelijking van deze novellen wil ik op de volgende manier uitwerken. Ten eerste wil ik me op de inhoud, het genre en de hoofdpersonages concentreren (hoofdstuk 1: De novellen over een schrijver: genre, inhoud en crisissituatie). Daarna wil ik de tijdelijke en ruimtelijke parallellen van de beide verhalen bespreken (hoofdstuk 2: Setting: tijdelijke, ruimtelijke en narratieve parallellen ). Vervolgens wil ik de belangrijksten motieven en centrale thema s als b.v. het sublieme, de vlucht en de zoektocht en de roes die in de beide teksten present zijn gaan vergelijken ( hoofdstuk 3: De innerlijke wereld van de personages en de belangrijkste motieven).Ten laatst ga ik over Gussinklo s en Mann s opvatting van het schone en laat zien hoe dat in de novellen wordt gepresenteerd (hoofdstuk 4: De tegenstelling tussen het schone en lelijke: ). In de slotbeschouwingen wil ik de conclusie uit de vergelijking van deze beide teksten trekken.
